About Medical Marijuana in North Carolina
North Carolina has considered several bills on medical marijuana over the years, with the most recent being passed by the state Senate as recently as June 2024. However, all of them have failed to become law.
Fortunately, state residents do have some options. Although medical and recreational cannabis is still illegal, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI) have taken it upon themselves to open dispensaries for medical and recreational purposes on tribal land. Their program is accessible to all North Carolina citizens.
It is important to note that possession of less than half an ounce is still a Class 3 misdemeanor, so people who leave the tribal lands with cannabis run the risk of trouble with the law.
To date, the only relief North Carolina officials have given to citizens regarding medical cannabis is passing the Epilepsy Alternative Treatment Act, which permits adolescents to seek hemp extract as an alternative treatment for intractable seizure disorder.
The Cannabis Project That’s Breaking Barriers
Veriheal is partnering with Johns Hopkins University and Realm of Caring to facilitate the biggest cannabis research study ever! Called The National Cannabis Study, this research is poised to revolutionize global understanding of medical cannabis through a never-before-used multi-dimensional approach. By focusing on real-world experiences and data, the study aims to further cannabis education and inform clinical decision-making, product development, and public policy.
