London English - South-East England It's from the Latin numero "with the number", from numerus "number". So item No. 3 is the item with the number 3. E

Massachusetts, U.S. English - U.S. Who expects it to be "Nu.?" I don't. When you make a blanket statement such as "it is expected," you are saying this about all people. If you just mean that you expected it to be that, you should say "I expected it to be ..." "No." comes from the Latin "numero." Many English abbreviations are formed from the first and last letters of the word they abbreviate, such as "Mr." for "Mister." Latin was the standard language for scientific work for many centuries as the English language was developing, because all educated people throughout Europe could read and write it, and for a long time numbers were used largely in science. (Quantities were used in all aspects of life, of course - to measure distances, weights, money and more - but their units had their own abbreviations. Some of those abbreviations came from Latin too, such as "lb." for "pound" and "d" for "penny*," but that's another topic.) _____________________ *The traditional, pre-decimal (pre-1970) U.K. penny. The present penny, worth 2.4 of the old ones, is abbreviated p. Last edited: Jan 20, 2012 D
