In my opinion this an act of weakness because Oedipus decides not to face what has happen; by blinding himself he is forced to not see what is infront of him (i.e. his problems). Oedipus asks Creon to drive him out of Thebes because he doesnt want others to see him suffering. In my opinion his suffering is derserved because at the beginning of the story Oedipus put himself on a very high pedestal, comparing himself to the gods. One can say his arrogance may have determined his fate. Reply Goodson 10/5/2014 05:40:50 amDon't use "In my opinion." We know it's your opinion, you wrote it! Reply Micah 10/2/2014 09:43:38 amOedipus blinds himself because he doesnt want to see his mother, and wife, dead. He already has to deal with the fact that he has children by her and with him being their father and their brother, it's already disturbing. I feel like this was an act of weakness because he went to the extreme by gauging out his eyes, when he could have simply walked away and left her body where it was. With his eyes gone, he asked Creon to drive him from Thebes because he doesn't want anyone to see him suffering through life without eyes. He wanted to be shielded away from actyally looking deeply into his real problems, and I think that his fate was justified. Oedipus deserved this fate because he was, indeed, a tragic hero, meaning he had a flaw, which was arrogance and ignorance. He thought too highly of himself. By him being ignorant, it lead to a very shocking revealance and resulting in an unpleasant ending. Reply Cameron 10/2/2014 09:44:29 amOedipus blinds himself because does not want to see his mother dead knowing that he has something to do with it. I feel that this shows how strong Oedipus. Usually there is always a consequence when you deal with death during this time period. It shows that he is able to own up to what he had done. He asked Creon to drive him to Thebes because he didn't want the people to see him suffering without sight.Oedipus suffering is deserved because he was very blind and naive to the signs around him. Reply Goodson 10/5/2014 05:43:13 amThat's it? This is a very average response. Use the text to guide you. Reply Sierra 10/2/2014 10:26:30 am“Nothing limits intelligence more than ignorance; nothing fosters ignorance more than one's own opinions; nothing strengthens opinions more than refusing to look at reality.” ― Sheri S. Tepper, The Visitor Oedipus blinds himself because he obviously considered blinding himself an appropriate punishment, since he could not see what was happening around him and he probably felt humiliated and ashamed for what he did. Even though he didn't know he still did it and he felt that he deserved to be punished . He blinded himself and begged to be basically banished. If you ask me Oedipus blinding himself was an act of strength. I do not believe that Oedipus took out his eyes because he decided not to face what has happened. It is nothing in front of him to see, everything already happened. I believe that the act of blinding himself was Oedipus' realizing what he had actually done and he was owning up to it. If he really didn't want to face his problems he could have just committed suicide like his mother/wife.Jocasta couldn't bear to live with the fact that she had married her son, who had killed her first husband, and therefore she took the easy way out and committed suicide, which is in fact an act of weakness one the other hand Oedipus was strong enough to live with those facts.. By putting out his eyes Oedipus shows that he understands what he had done wrong and does it as an act of punishment which symbolizes strength because he can own up to what he did and come to the realization that he was wrong. Many people don't own up to what they do wrong and Oedipus does and that is why I see him as a strong individual. As far as Oedipus asking Creon to drive him out of Thebes , i believe he does this because he was looked at as a very strong ,powerful figure , i mean he was the king. He probably was ashamed at everything that has happened , he basically killed their old king. There probably would have been an even bigger issue if he had stayed in Thebes. He already caused enough drama and he didn't really want to start anymore. Oedipus was the king and he couldn't even see what was going on around him so he probably felt so stupid that he couldn't show his face around Thebes anymore. I don't think Oedipus believes his fate has been just because no matter what he does to himself he can't change what had happened. I think that Oedipus's fate was partially deserved. Although it was his destiny to kill his father and marry his mother , it is kind of hard to feel bad for him because of his attitude. He put himself on a high pedestal and looked at himself as a god and we all know the people who try to compare themselves to gods never end up having a happy ending. On one hand I feel bad for him because it wasn't his fault and he didn't know but on the other hand he was very cocky and thought of himself as a god. He let his pride get the best of him. Reply Goodson 10/5/2014 05:40:05 amThorough. Good use of a quote. Reply Michael 10/2/2014 10:40:46 amOedipus blinds himself because he cannot bear to see anymore of life.It is a act of strength because he is man enough to admit his wronf and to remove himself from the equation. He is also man enough to reserve his pride and have creon banish him so that nobody can see or judge him. His act was justice for himself and thats what matters, however his sufferibg was well undeserved. Reply Goodson 10/5/2014 05:43:49 amThis is it? Validate your opinions with direct evidence. Reply Anthony 10/2/2014 10:50:33 amOedipus blinds himself because he no longer wants to see the world that cursed him. Oedipus feels as though the truth was right in front of him and he couldn't see it so he thinks his eyes are useless. I think this was an act of weakness because instead of realizing that nothing he did could stop the prophecy he did something rash and permanent. He asks Creon to drive him out of the city because he feels like a disgrace and the citizens have turned against him and his family. He feels like his fate was unjust because he saw no reason why this happened to him. He thought he was doing right by trying to find the killer of Laius even though the killer was him. I think his suffering was partially deserved. I say partially because he was an arrogant person who put himself above a god which is something that you don’t do but, I don’t think he should have suffered as badly as he did. I think that at most he should have been destined to fail as a king but, not destined to kill his father and marry his mother. Reply Goodson 10/5/2014 05:39:35 amBe very careful when you say "partially." Choose a side and find evidence to support that side. Reply Jordan 10/2/2014 11:55:28 amOedipus blinds himself because he cannot stand to see Jocasta dead or what his life has become. This is an act of weakness because he did not want to face his problems. Instead of dealing with the situation, he took away his eyes as a way of keeping himself from seeing these painful things. Although, nothing that happened was his fault Oedipus was ashamed. He no longer wanted people to see him or the horrible person he was. This is why Oedipus asks Creon to banish him from Thebes. He feels this is unjust because there is nothing he could have done to prevent this from happening. He was doomed since the day he was born. His fate could not be changed although him and his parents did everything in their power to prevent it. Although Oedipus did not mean to do these things I believe his suffering was deserved. I believe this was a consequence of his pride. He thought he was as powerful as a God and this was a way the Gods showed him otherwise. Reply Goodson 10/5/2014 05:44:27 amGood last lines. Make connections. Reply Desmond D 10/2/2014 12:15:23 pmOedipus blinded himself because he had him an epiphany and realized that being married to his mother and having kids by her was morally wrong. Although he didn't know that was his mother and the prophecy described him he wasn't sure it was him. even though he knew the the prophecy he didn't think it was him. No matter how hard he tried he couldn't change his fate. I think it was an act of strength because he owned up to his wrong doings. What Oedipus did was an abomination against his culture. He ask to be banished so he can leave and be free of judgment from everyone else. He feels that this fate was unjust because he had no control over his life. I feel that everything that happened to him was undeserved. Reply Ta'Carra 10/2/2014 01:03:22 pmOedipus unravels the truth of his origin in the ending of the play. When the truth comes out, he is horrified at the extent of his crimes. After finding his wife’s body hanging, he gauges out his eyes, which results in blindness. Oedipus blinds himself because he cannot stand to see or face the reality behind his actions. This is a form of weakness because he knows that what he has done to himself, his mother, his father, and his children will haunt him and he’d rather not see the sight of his torment. Oedipus requests to get driven away from Thebes because his motive stays the same as in the act of blinding himself. He wishes to run away from the consequences to the crimes he’s committed. His fate seems to be unjust because he didn't have any control over his parents’ identity and the fact the he was given up. Oedipus was blind to his real identity so his actions shouldn't have been accounted for if he didn't have knowledge of that or who the people were around him. Although I believe his fate was unjust, I think his suffering was partially deserved. Even though he had no fault in marrying his mother and created incestuous children, he brought on the consequences that resulted from that. He gauged out his own eyes, causing himself physical and internal pain, and he asked to be exiled. Oedipus deserved his punishment because he brought it on his self. Reply Jeremy 10/2/2014 09:31:35 pmOedipus blind himself to keep his pride and honestly he did not deserve this punishment. His fate was sealed when he married his mother but he did not know that. He wanted Creon to banish him to not only get out of kingdom but not to have others look down on him and lose his reputation. Ultimately, Oedipus couldn't let his kingdom down but his fate made him lose everything. His pride was too strong which made him want make these choices. Reply goodson 10/5/2014 05:46:26 amAnd? Answer the "so what" question. Reply Desmond 10/2/2014 10:38:56 pmOedipus blinds himself after seeing his mother dead and he can't look at what has happened to his mother. I feel like Oedipus took his eyes out of an act of weakness and it was a very sad moment for him so that is what he thought to do. Oedipus asked Creon to drive him out of Thebes because he doesn't want anyone to see him suffering after what had happened. I feel his doesn't deserve to suffer like this but he was a very arrogant man because he thought of himself to highly and frown upon other people, he determined what's was going to happen to him from his own actions. Reply goodson 10/5/2014 05:47:18 amSo why doesn't he deserve it if he did it to himself? Reply Daisha 10/3/2014 12:28:24 pmOedipus blinds himself because everything that he has had good in his life he watched it crumble in front of his own two eyes. Also, because sight is worthless if you aren't able to see the truth. I feel that is not necessarily a sign of weakness but a sign of guilt, regardless of how he didn't know that he married his mother or killed his father but also because he let his own people down, and was the reason for the plague. He also feels guilt about accusing other people for the plague that he started. Oedipus asked Creon to move him from Thebes because he is ashamed and because he feels as though anyone who is around him ends up hurt or dead. So he feels as though his presence is negative. I feel that heshould have partially suffered and just seeing all of these bad things just happening to him and the people that's around him was enough. Reply goodson 10/5/2014 05:48:08 amWhat does "partially suffered" mean? Reply Cayla 10/3/2014 01:25:38 pmOedipus blinds himself because he does not want to face the world knowing what he had done. this is a weakness because he should have owned up to what he did and accept he could not run from or change fate. Oedipus wanted Creon to drive him from Thebes because he didn't want to face and have other see he and know what he did. He believed his crime was just because he attempted to escape fate and that is something your can not chnge. This was somehung he should have partially suffered from because he attempted to escape fate and because he couldn't control what is supposed to help him.
