It’s meant to represent the Japanese mythological creature, Namahage, whose grotesque features – namely, his ferocious pointed teeth, bright red face, horns, and giant, crooked nose – are immortalized in emoji form. Namahage is said to visit homes on New Year’s Eve, and people still dress as him as part of New Year’s traditions in Japan. Outside Japan, however, the ogre emoji is likely to be used solely to represent something scary, monstrous or grotesque, as a symbol for the devil or an ogre, or as a series of Halloween themed emojis!
