- Kakashi has never liked to make much of a big deal out of his birthday. Not only because he can’t be bothered, but also because he’s never seen his birth as something worth celebrating.
- As such, very few people know about his birthday and of those who do know, even fewer celebrate it beyond a murmured “happy birthday” as they pass him in the street.
- He wakes up before dawn and stands at the window, simply observing nature. He doesn’t feel any older, he doesn’t feel any different but the sky… The sky looks different. Brighter, maybe. He feels a little lighter, though that could be the alcohol he drank the night before.
- Before long, he has a hot shower and gets ready for the day. He waves at people with a raised hand if they smile at him and he gives his famous one-eyed smile to those who deign to wish him a happy birthday.
- He trains his Team, who know it’s his birthday but they also know he doesn’t want any fuss made. Naruto pretends to be hungry and Sakura quickly catches on and agrees, with Sasuke making a grunt in his own form of agreement. Kakashi knows what they’re doing, he appreciates it, but he plays along and agrees to go with them to lunch.
- And so the Dad of Team Seven goes out with his children and they all have lunch together, Sasuke and Naruto having an eating competition having goaded each other into it, and when they inevitably vomit, Sakura rolls her eyes and Kakashi sighs. He’s pleased that none of them have made a show of his ‘special’ day.
- The four shinobi set off together and Kakashi makes sure to walk each of them home individually, thanking them for taking him out to lunch even though none of them needed to with his own way for each of them:
He rests a hand on top of Sasuke’s head and offers a one-eyed crinkly smile.
He ruffles Naruto’s hair and recieves a cheesy grin in response.
Sakura throws herself at him in a hug, which he accepts with a chuckle.
- When he’s left to walk home on his own, Iruka bounds up out of nowhere with Genma, Asuma and Tsunade and the four of them go out drinking for the afternoon.
- They make sure he has fun and again, no one says those two words, something Kakashi is all too happy about.
- He goes home, then, when the sun is setting and as he turns his face up to accept the warm glow of the sun, a soft smile crosses his face and he closes his eyes, feeling happy to be alive for the first time in a long time.
The ending made me cry omg!! :) Happy birthday, Kakashi-sensei! We love you!! <33333
