Types of Driver Licenses in Oklahoma

For each license type there's a corresponding type of instruction permit Class D RegularIt is the most common driver license that allows you to operate cars and trucks, including recreational vehicles and fire trucks. Class A/B/C CommercialThese are commercial driver licenses (CDL) that allow you to operate any combination of vehicles with gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more provided the GVRW of the vehicle towed is more than 10,000 pounds (Class A); any vehicle with GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more or towing a vehicle with GVWR not in excess of 10,000 pounds (Class B); any single vehicle that transports 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or is placarded for transportation of hazardous materials (Class C). How to Apply for Your Learner Permit in Oklahoma

Getting a learner permit is the first step of Oklahoma Graduated Driving Licensing System for teenagers between 15 ½ and 18 years of age. The permit allows you to drive between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. supervised by a licensed driver of at least 21 years of age. If you are 18+, you may also apply for a learner permit if you need to practice supervised driving before the road test.

1Get driver education if under 16 ½ years of age

You must be receiving or have completed driver education. You will have to provide a certificate, green card from public school driver's ed or a contract for driver's education from a commercial school or a parent-taught driver's education affidavit.

2Apply in person

You will have to visit a driver license exam site. Use this map to find a convenient location near you. You may make an appointment online to save time in line. Note that some centers are staffed with one examiner only and they may stop accepting walk-ins much earlier than their formal closing time.

3Bring documentation required

• State-certified birth certificate or another form of Primary ID
• Social Security Card or another form of Secondary ID
• Social Security Number
• Letter from an Oklahoma school stating that you meet enrollment, reading and attendance requirements or an alternative document ( if under the age of 18)
• Driver education document if between 15 ½ and 16 years of age (check step 1)
• Documents that proof legal name change (if applicable)

4Pass a vision test

You pass if your visual acuity is 20/60 or better with or without corrective lenses, or 20/50 or better in one eye.

5Pass a written test

6Visit a tag agency

Here is a full list of Tag Agents. Bring the form issued by a license examiner that confirms you have passed vision and written tests. You will be also required to provide primary and secondary identification.

7Pay the fees

Application fee: $4.00. If you took your written test more than once, you will have to add $4.00 for each attempt.

Permit fee: $38.50.

8Receive your permit

You will hold your permit for at least 6 months if you are under the age of 18. If you are 18+, hold your permit for at least 30 days before applying for the driver license.

How to Apply for Intermediate Driver License in Oklahoma

Getting an intermediate license is the second step of Oklahoma Graduated Driving Licensing System for teenagers between 16 and 18 years of age. It allows you to drive on your own but with several restrictions:

• No driving between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless you are driving for school, church or work activities; or accompanied by a licensed adult 21+.
• No more than one passenger that doesn't live in your home unless accompanied by a licensed adult 21+.

1. Hold your learner permit for at least 6 months

   Make sure you don't get any traffic convictions during this time.

2. Complete driver education (if under 16 ½ years of age)

   If you haven't completed it before getting your permit. You must complete public school driver's ed or driver's education from a commercial school or a parent-taught driver's education. If you are between 16 ½ and 18, you don't have to get driver education, however, if you have completed it, bring the certificate to your drive test appointment.

3. Practice driving

   You must have at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel training, at least 10 of which are at night. Your trainer may be any licensed driver at least 21 years of age who has been licensed for at least 2 years. Your parent/guardian is required to certify it by signing Affidavit of Driver Training.

4. Make a drive test appointment

   You may schedule your appointment online. If you need to reschedule, you may do it with no charge until one minute before the appointment time.

5. Bring documentation required
   • Your learner permit (If you lost it, bring another form of primary ID)
   • A secondary ID ( e.g. your SSN card)
   • Your Social Security Number
   • Driver Education Completion Certificate (required for under 16 ½ years of age)
   • Insurance Security Verification Form The form must have the VIN number matching the vehicle you will be driving.

   The drive test at DPS is administered at no charge.

6. Bring parent or guardian

   If they cannot come, bring the Affidavit of Driver Training completed by your parent/guardian in front of a notary public.

7. Bring a vehicle in good order

   It must have a current tag and valid insurance.

8. Pass your drive (skills test)

9. Visit a tag agency

10. Receive your intermediate license

    You must hold it for at least 6 months or reach 18 years of age to get an unrestricted license. There mustn't be any traffic convictions on your driving record.

How to Apply for Adult (Unrestricted) Driver License in Oklahoma

If you have never been licensed and you are over 18 years of age, start with step 1.

If you are under 18 but hold an OK intermediate license, you may get your unrestricted license earlier. You will be asked to demonstrate your ability to drive safely with the traffic and perform basic driving patterns.

If you take the test at your local DPS, there will not charge you anything for it. You may schedule your drive test appointment online. If you need to reschedule, you may do it with no charge until one minute before the appointment time.

If you have taken driver education, you may schedule your exam at your school or DPS. Your school may charge up to $25.00 for the test.

Before the test

Arrive on time and bring the following

• A primary ID ( if you are under 18 years of age, it must be your learner permit)
• A secondary ID ( e.g. your SSN card)
• Your Social Security Number
• Driver Education Completion Certificate (required for under 16 ½ years of age)
• Insurance Security Verification Form. The form must have the VIN number matching the vehicle you will be driving.

Note the following:

• If you are under 18, you must be accompanied by your parent or legal guardian.
• The vehicle you bring must be in good order and have a current tag and valid insurance.
• No pets or passengers will be allowed in your car during the test.
• The test won't be administered in case the examiner decides that the road is hazardous or slick.

During the test

The examiner will sit next to you and will give you instructions. Your job is to drive lawfully and safely as well as follow the instructions.

The examiner will check if you can fulfil the following maneuvers:

• Right and left turns
• Backing
• Parking on a hill
• Parallel parking
• Driving in the correct lane
• Using signals appropriately
• Obeying traffic signs, signals and markings
• Giving and accepting right-of-way appropriately
• Observing other vehicles and pedestrians
• Responding to traffic situation
• Controlling the vehicle

You will fail you test if

• You make too many errors.
• You drive dangerously.
• You break the law.
• You refuse to follow the examiner's instructions.
• You get into traffic collision.

At the End of the TestThe examiner will let you know if you passed or failed. If you pass, you will be given paperwork to present at the Tag agent and receive your license. If you fail, you may retake your exam on a later day as instructed by the examiner. If you fail for the third time, you will be required to wait 30 days before your next attempt.
