Gainesville, Fla — According to the CDC, so far this year 83 Floridians have died from COVID-19 and more than 610,000 have contracted the virus.

University of Florida researchers project omicron cases here in Florida will peak in the middle of this month.

Initially, UF researchers projected omicron cases to peak in February, but Dr. Ira Longini said as they learned new information that changed. "We learned more about the virus and especially that it has a much shorter incubation period. Then we have the ascending beginning curve in December that we could calibrate off of in Florida, which was a much steeper rise in cases than we anticipated originally,” he said.

For the first two days of this week, Florida reported less than 50,000 cases a day, the first time daily case counts dropped below 50,000 since the beginning of the year; however, this afternoon the state reported almost 72,000 new cases.

"You can breathe a sigh of relief if you're vaccinated, said Dr. Longini. If you're not, I would strongly suggest you get vaccinated because there's still some omicron around as we come down over the next three weeks, and we don’t know what variant may be next."

While the case counts are at all time highs, researchers believe more people have the virus, and they might not be showing symptoms, or able to get tested.

In the future, Longini expects more variants. He recommends people get vaccinated and a booster.

He said getting the shot will help us collectively build immunity against the virus.
