On My Block Season 3 - Release Date On Netflix, Auditions, Cast

On My Block season three simply had to happen. It would have been incredibly cruel of Netflix not to renew the teen drama because there are A LOT of unresolved issues that we need answers to – most notably the fact that Cesar, Ruby, Jamal and Monse have all been abducted, not to mention Monse's decision to leave Freeridge to go to boarding school, and "the underlying mythology of Roller World", something that co-creator Lauren Iungerich mentioned in an interview with TVGuide.

Julio Macias (Spooky) chatted to MEA Worldwide about how he thinks the kidnapping could be linked to the Roller World money and how that could tie into the wider narrative.

"I have a little bit of a conspiracy theory that it goes deeper," he said. "I think that the money might be older than we think it is. It's not just the Roller World stuff. I don't know who it is, but I hope that it's someone on Spooky's side, so maybe the Santos – that would be interesting because that would give Oscar a challenge of going against his second family which is the gang."

With Macias's fan favourite now promoted to series regular, we should probably listen to him.

And according to Sierra Capri (Monse), two different versions of that kidnapping scene were filmed.

"There was the scene where I just walked away after they get pulled off in the van, and I don't know what happened to them," she told Vulture.

"And then there was the scene where I actually get taken away as well. Lauren said that she was going to decide which scene she wanted to use later."

News of the show's renewal was tweeted from the show's various social accounts and the reaction was HUGE.

Chatting to Vulture about the massive reaction to the show in general, Sierra Capri (Monse) said: "I think we all hoped and prayed that it would do what it has done so far, but none of us knew for sure what was going to happen. We were just prepared for anything.

"I'm definitely blessed and grateful that the response has been positive, for the most part. I always get a lot of girls that say that they love how strong and independent she [Monse] is, and she's not afraid to speak her mind, because we live in a society where females aren't always encouraged to do that. And I do get a lot of emails that also say, 'I wish that she'd focus on herself a little more."

Now, back to season three – we finally have an official synopsis from Netflix, although it doesn't give much away: "They thought life was about to return to what passes for normal in Freeridge, but the stakes just got even higher."

We now know, from the trailer, that Cesar, Ruby, Jamal and Monse, and a woman called Cuchillos wants the four abductees to carry out a very important job for her: find Little Ricky... who is alive!

"We have an awesome story planned for season three," Iungerich told TVGuide prior to that reveal. "I like to know where I'm going before I start writing and so I always try to figure out the next season before I start the season I'm working on.

"I think what we have in store is a fun, surprising reveal in season three. I think they're definitely going to be in danger, that's for sure. But it might not be what you think it is."

Season two ended with that major cliffhanger, which was a risk considering that Netflix hadn't given season three the green light at that point.

But according to co-writer Eddie Gonzalez, that's not a factor they think about when making the show.

"The biggest concern when we were writing the show was story, because we thought if we told a great, compelling story that people could relate to, we would get a renewal," he told Indie Wire.

"But that wasn't the main reason to do it. As a writer, you want to write stories that hook people. You want a visceral response to your work. So, when we were writing that, we just cared about telling the best possible story, and whatever happens, happens.

"[If the show hadn't been renewed], we would say, 'You know what? We entertained ourselves for 10 episodes."

That cliffhanger helped them to set up season three with, in co-writer Jeremy Haft's words (via IndieWire), "the most excitement, the most interest, and the most story possible".

"They were so mad at us last year that they were so emotional and frustrated by that heart-wrenching ending," said Iungerich of that season two ending (via Entertainment Weekly).

"We knew we could not tonally duplicate what we did last season, it would just be redundant. But we knew we needed a good cliffhanger because that is what our show is; it's surprising and we need to keep the audience wanting to have that same fervour to come back and watch season three, which I think we've achieved."

This is what Eddie Gonzalez had to say about season three's overall narrative: "We have some tentpole ideas. I'd be lying to you if I told you exactly what episode one is, but we know where we want to drive to, so that’s an important thing."

And don't expect season three to be the end of the series, as the team don't have an end date in mind:

"We were thinking that we were going to break The Simpsons' record," joked Haft.

"What we can tell you is that, in communities like that, there are so many great stories. Because of that, that will help us with the story moving forward. I mean, I have 117 first cousins. I can mine a lot of material from those cousins alone," Gonzalez said.

Chatting about what he hopes people will take away from the show to Indie Wire, Gonzalez added: "Here's the thing about growing up in a place like that. People always think it's this horrible place to grow up. It's actually just the opposite.

"There's comedy. There's tragedy. But more than anything else, there is this sense of community. There's this vibrancy. There's a sense of colour in the neighbourhood that feels so great."

And as long as the current bingeing culture continues, there's no reason for the show to end. Netflix's VP of content Cindy Holland told The Hollywood Reporter that there's an upward trend in terms of the audience.

"Viewership grew pretty steadily from the launch of season one, and then we saw a big bump in new viewers coming in and discovering the show in season two, as well as people who loved it before coming back for season two."

"You could also see it in the social following of some of the cast, who have gotten up to a million or more followers, which is pretty sizeable considering they were completely unknown a couple of years ago."

But, speaking of that cast, there was a slight problem involving their salaries, which was delaying proceedings.

Luckily, those differences have now been ironed out and all is well. Yay!

On My Block season 3 auditions: Can I take part?

Back in 2015, there were casting calls for two supporting characters for season two –LaDasha, a hustler who "scams neighbourhood knuckleheads out of money", and Ashley, a girl "going to school, while trying to avoid the pitfalls of her neighbourhood".

Then in August 2019, there was a call for "Hispanic males and females, 18-years-old to 25-years-old, who can still play a high school student".

Obviously, season three has been cast. But if season four is given the green light, the people behind the show could be on the hunt for some new faces.

On My Block season 3 cast: Who's returning?

Monse (Sierra Capri), Ruby (Jason Genao), Cesar (Diego Tinoco), Jasmine (Jessica Marie Garcia), Jamal (Brett Gray), Ruby's brother Mario (Danny Ramirez), and Spooky (Julio Macias) will all return.

Olivia, however, tragically lost her life after being shot.

The actor who played her, Ronni Hawk, came under fire from the show's fanbase last year after a number of pro-Donald Trump and anti-gun-control tweets surfaced.
