One Piece Reveals Luffy & Straw Hat Pirates' Surprising Canon ...

Throughout the One Piece saga, in nearly every fight that Luffy finds himself, he is usually the shorter opponent. Conversely, when depicted with other members of the Straw Hat Pirates crew, he seems of average height. This contrast is a bit confusing because, it would mean that most of his opponents, male or female, are giants. Fortunately, to give some peace of mind, Shueisha, One Piece's publisher has provided an answer for the exact height of Luffy and other One Piece characters, at their Jump Shop in Tokyo's Shibuya District.

One Piece tells the story of Monkey D. Luffy, and his quest to become the greatest pirate of them all. As a child, Luffy mistakenly eats (what appeared to be) the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit which gives him the ability to stretch his body as if it were a rubber band. On his way to fame and fortune, Luffy meets hundreds of people, some of which become his friends or crewmates, and others who would do him. One Piece is serialized in a manga compendium known as Weekly Shonen Jump, which is published by Shueisha. Jump Shops sells officially licensed products and material connected with or linked to the manga that are published in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Since One Piece is so popular it's outsold every single Batman comic combined, Shibuya's Jump Shop has a special section of the store, dedicated to One Piece and Luffy. In one corner of that section, there's a life-sized height chart that provides the official heights of the characters in the manga. According to the chart, for instance, Luffy's official height is listed as being a little over 5-feet-7-inches (174cm), which compares with his actual depiction in the manga, which is a little taller than Nami, who is listed, on the chart, as being 5-feet-6-inches (170cm), but shorter than Sanji and Zoro who are both listed as being a hair over 5-feet-9-inches (181cm). That is, the chart confirms, as the manga portrays, that most of the Straw Hat Pirates crew is made up of men and women of average heights. The only major difference that the chart brings out is the heights of Iron Man Franky, who is listed as being 7-feet-9-inches tall (240cm), and Brook who is listed as just a smidgeon over 9-feet tall. While both are depicted in the manga as being taller than their Straw Hat Pirate crewmates, the chart shows that a more realistic depiction would show them a being much taller. Indeed, Luffy would barely reach Brook's midsection.

More interesting, the chart does reveal that most of the opponents that Luffy does fight are super-giant-sized. For instance, Luffy is fighting Kaido in a battle that proves One Piece is still fresh. While it is clear that Kaido is a giant, what the height chart points out is how much bigger than Luffy, he really is. The manga simply does not do justice to the height differential. More interestingly, the height also shows, indirectly, just how powerful and tough Luffy is. Win or lose, inch-for-inch, it's hard to argue against the claim that Luffy has already become the greatest pirate ever.

While the Shibuya Jump Shop height chart is a nice way to interact with fandom by allowing fans and customers to compare their personal heights to Luffy and other One Piece characters, it also provides insight into the manga, and more specifically into the brilliance of Luffy.
