INTRODUCTION

Hello everybody!

It’s been a while – once again – since I last wrote an article in the blog. For quite a while I was trying to come up with a cool idea about a potential article. As I said in the “Top 5 ways of time traveling” I wouldn’t really like writing down something that had to do with the “Top 5 fire users” in an anime or a manga. As a result, I am going to write down a short article, with an opinion which probably all of you disagree with… And that is, as the title indicates… Why Hody Jones is one of the greatest One Piece villains. Oh, and SPOILER ALERT, of course.

PERSONALITY / GOAL

I know. Hody is the embodiment of racism. He was something like the manifestation of the hatred fishmen had for humans because of the racism they suffered all those years. And while there were a few people who represented the opposite ideals (the ideal of living in peace and together with the humans) like Otohime, Hody Jones was the exact opposite. As a result, he wanted to take over Fishman Island and establish his own empire which wouldn’t really be that friendly to humans at all.

PLAN

Soooo, we have his goal. However, just being the manifestation of the hundred years racism between the two races is not enough to make him a great villain. Besides that, Hody Jones was presented as a very calculative man. Even from the years he was in the army, he killed queen Otohime in order to blame humans for that and make the situation between the two races even worse. Furthermore, his plan went way back before he joined the Fishman Army, as the reason he joined it was to had the chance to steal the Tamatebako, Fishman Island’s national treasure, which was nothing more than a drug that would double his power. So, for many years, Hody was working in the shadows, causing a sabotage in the relationship of fishmen and humans and also figuring out ways of getting stronger in order to take down the royal family and rule the Ryugu Kingdom as he pleased.

MOTIVE / PAST

But it doesn’t really end here. We have a villain with an evil, who set up a plan that took him years to set up and put in motion, but what about his motive? Was it really that important? The truth is, as you probably know, it wasn’t. Because when he was asked what the humans did to him that led him to do all those things, his answer was a simple “Nothing”. He was a racist just because of it. He was the bad guy just because of the stories he had heard from other people. He didn’t really have a bad past other than growing up in the ghetto of the Fishman Island. He just believed that humans were inferior and that they’d be better as slaves of fishmen. His influences made him the man he was for no actual reason. And that was quite shocking to me.

CONCLUSION

To sum things up. Hody had an evil goal, a perfect plan and the motive of “Just because”. He was the perfect representation of a racist character. He wanted to cause a genocide to humans, he even killed the members of his own species who were willing to co-operate with them and he wasn’t willing to interact with them to give them a second chance. In fact, he hated them without really having any real interaction with them. And I find that great in terms of character writing from Oda’s part.

Finally, he fills his role perfectly. He is a despicable antagonist for most of the readers. The truth is, that while I defend him as an antagonist, I actually dislike him. I do not sympathize with him. He is a true villain. Villains are people we are supposed to hate and Hody is probably one of the most hated characters of the franchise. And that is what makes him successful. Shame he didn’t get the chance to stand out more and make us hate him more as his story was one of the least-favorite stories thus far.

And… That’s it! Thanks for reading.

Oh and I forgot. He had a great design, especially after he transformed from his power up pills and HE WAS A FREAKING WHITE SHARK FISHMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
