One Piece is the name the world gave to all the treasure gained by the Pirate King Gol D. Roger.[2] At least a portion of it once belonged to Joy Boy during the Void Century.[3] The treasure is said to be of unimaginable value, and is supposedly located on Laugh Tale, the final island of the Grand Line.

The One Piece is the driving goal of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew, as well as many other pirates, all seeking to claim the treasure in order to become the next Pirate King, following Roger's final words at his world-changing execution.

History[]

At some point during the Void Century, a man called 'Joy Boy' came across an island at the very end of the Grand Line (beyond even Lodestar, the last island reachable by conventional Log Poses). Here, he left behind a treasure of unimaginable value.[3] However, Dr. Vegapunk theorized that the person who would find it might not be the one Joy Boy initially was hoping for.[4] Stories of this treasure on the final island piqued the interest of Gol D. Roger, and he took the World Government forbidding exploration of the island as evidence of it being real.[5]

Only the members of the Roger Pirates crew that journeyed to the island learned what exactly the treasure consists of. Upon arriving on the island and seeing Joy Boy's treasure, the Roger Pirates simply began to laugh. Roger described it as a "tale full of laughs", which gave him the idea to name the final island "Laugh Tale".[3] Sometime after the Roger Pirates' discovery, the world at large would begin to refer to Roger's treasures as the "One Piece".[2]

Moments before Roger was executed, he announced to the world that this great treasure could be claimed by anyone who could reach it, thereby starting the Great Pirate Era. With the executions of Roger and Kouzuki Oden, and the unknown fates of the majority of Roger's crew, the only known surviving individuals in the present day who are aware of the treasure's true nature are Silvers Rayleigh, Crocus and Scopper Gaban.

The closest the Straw Hat Pirates have ever come to finding out the nature of the One Piece was during the Celestial Dragon Hit-and-Run Incident, when Usopp tried to ask Silvers Rayleigh about it. However, Luffy stopped him on the grounds that learning about it from someone else would defeat the purpose of their adventures and that becoming the Pirate King would have little merit if he already knew anything about the One Piece.[6]

After decades of speculations and doubts due to nobody having reached Laugh Tale in over two decades, the treasure's existence was confirmed by Whitebeard during the Summit War of Marineford with his last breath and reignited the dreams of pirates to claim the treasure for themselves, in an era without Roger or Whitebeard. He mentioned that "a grand battle will engulf the entire world" and "the world will be shaken to its core" when the One Piece is found.[7]

During the Raid on Onigashima, Big Mom had an internal monologue seemingly expressing the idea that "some of" the One Piece might be located in Wano Country. This has yet to be elaborated on further.[8]

During a worldwide broadcast happening during the Egghead Incident, Vegapunk also confirmed the existence of the One Piece and stated that whoever claimed it would have the power to decide the fate of the world.[9]

Translation and Dub Issues[]

Name[]

In the original manga, the term "One Piece" (ワンピース, Wan Pīsu?) is often accompanied by an additional string of text translating roughly to "the great hito-tsunagi treasure" (ひとつなぎの大秘宝, Hito-tsunagi no Dai-hihō?), initially as a separate descriptor[1] and later as a base-text directly glossed with the "One Piece" katakana.[10]

The exact meaning of "hito-tsunagi" has not yet been clarified, and there are three possible readings:

  • That it should be read as "一つなぎ"—a more or less literal Japanese translation of "(in) one piece".[11]
  • That it should be read as "人繋ぎ"—a phrase roughly translating to "the rope linking all men".[12]
  • That it should be read as "hitotsu-nagi" or "一つ凪"—a phrase roughly translating to "one sea at peace".

English translations—professional or otherwise—generally do not relay this text consistently, if at all. The VIZ manga, for instance, refers to it as "[Gold Roger's] lost treasure" in Chapter 2, and as "greatest single treasure" in Chapter 507.

It should be noted that the name "One Piece" did not originate from Roger himself, but rather the "world at large" who did not know what the treasure actually was. Roger acknowledged this name as something the people had chosen,[2] but did not use it during his famous last words. Instead, he simply mentioned "[his] treasure" (俺の財宝, ore no zaihō?) left at "that place" (そこに, soko ni?).[13] Despite this, the 4Kids translation changed Roger's speech to include the name of the treasure: "I left everything I own in One Piece."

Big Mom's Question[]

In a monologue immediately before her defeat in Wano Country, Big Mom ruminates on the One Piece with three questions.[14] While the first two are accepted as straightforward phrasings of "What is it?" (何がある?) and "Where is it?" (どこにある?), the third is long and context-dependent enough to have drawn debates and speculation on its true meaning:

この国にもあるんだろ?

This question indisputably begins with "This country" (この国?), while the remaining text seems to refer to some additional (?) state of being; however, the lack of wider context makes it unclear whether the One Piece is even the subject, as is assumed for the first two questions.[15] Nevertheless, both of the series' official English translations follow the assumption.

  • The VIZ manga translates it as "Some of it's in this country too, isn't it?"
  • Funimation's anime dub translates it as "It could be right under my nose and I wouldn't even know."

(Additionally, it should be noted that while "This country" is often assumed to be Big Mom's present-day location of Wano, all three questions proceed directly from a recollection of demands Big Mom—and possibly other Rocks Pirates—made to Roger when he was alive, making it possible that they too relate to a past time and place.[16])

Trivia[]

  • Eiichiro Oda confirmed in a 2014 interview with mangaka Momoko Sakura that the One Piece is not something like "the journey itself was the real treasure" and that there will be a reward for those who find it.[17]
  • Whitebeard stated in his final words that the world will be "turned upside down" (いっくり返る, Ikkuri kaeru?) when the One Piece is found.[18]
    • Donquixote Doflamingo made a similar statement about the national treasure of Mary Geoise.[19]
  • Vegapunk ultimately links the survival and fate of the world to the One Piece and the person who would finally claim it.[9]
  • The subtitles of the spin-off series One Piece: Kobiyama Who Looks Like Koby - Two Piece in a Pod and Fischer's x One Piece - Search for the 7 Treasures are both based on the text commonly accompanying the One Piece, "the great hito-tsunagi treasure". In Kobiyama, "Two Piece in a Pod" (ウリふたつなぎの大秘宝, Uri Futatsunagi no Dai-hihō?) is a portmanteau of "two peas in a pod" (瓜二つ, urifutatsu?) and "the great hito-tsunagi treasure", while in Fischer's x One Piece, the subtitle replaces hito (1) with nana (7), resulting in the overall meaning "(in) seven pieces".
