Opening Day Wisconsin Trout Season

Opening day for Wisconsin fishing is traditionally the first Saturday in May. Hook and line fishing for many species of fish on many Wisconsin waters begins the first Saturday in May. However, to better manage Wisconsin fisheries, season dates are often specific to the species of fish as well as the water body.

The Southwestern Wisconsin trout streams are for those fly fishermen who are patient enough to stalk rainbows in three foot wide coulees with a field of cows on your back cast or through slow moving, meandering Wisconsin trout streams loaded with direct sunlight. Wisconsin Fly Fishing can provide an extremely rewarding fishing experience.

Opening Morning

Opening day for Wisconsin fishing is traditionally the first Saturday in May. Hook and line fishing for many, but not all, species of fish on many Wisconsin waters will run from May 3, 2003 to March 1, 2004. Getting Ready for Trout!

Every year "Free Fishing Weekend" (adobe acrobat/.pdf document) is the first consecutive Saturday and Sunday in June. Resident and nonresident anglers of all ages can fish without a fishing license as Wisconsin celebrates Free Fishing Weekend. Trout stamps are not needed during the two days, however, all other fishing regulations such as length and bag limits apply.

So there are really trout in here!

The DNR uses three categories to classify the different types of trout streams throughout the state. Collected here are detailed maps of trout streams found throughout Wisconsin. The maps are sorted by county, and each map has a separate key to indicate the name and Water Body Identification Code (WBIC) of each stream.
