Orlando Gay Pride 2022: Dates, Parade, Route - Misterb&b

  • 🎡 Florida’s largest Pride event
  • 🌈 Parade around Lake Eola Park
  • ✨ Mix of joy and remembrance

I’ve celebrated Pride in many U.S. cities, but Gay Pride in Orlando feels especially powerful and emotional. Known as Come Out With Pride Orlando, this event is one of Florida’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. It’s joyful, colorful, and deeply meaningful in a city that has become a symbol of resilience for the LGBTQ+ community. Every time I attend, I feel both the festive energy and the spirit of remembrance that make Orlando Pride unique.

The Pride parade in Orlando, called the “Most Colorful Parade,” takes place around Lake Eola in downtown. The route circles the lake, with thousands of spectators lining the streets, waving rainbow flags, and cheering for floats. Lake Eola Park also hosts the Pride Festival, with stages featuring live music, drag shows, and community organizations. As the sun sets, fireworks light up the sky above the lake, making it one of the most beautiful Pride finales I’ve ever seen.

Pride in Orlando is significant not only because it’s Florida’s largest LGBTQ+ event but also because it honors the memory of the victims of the Pulse nightclub tragedy. For me, the combination of celebration and remembrance makes Orlando Pride deeply moving — it’s both a festival of love and a tribute to resilience.

History and Significance of Orlando Pride

The first official Pride in Orlando began in 2005, organized as Come Out With Pride to create visibility for the LGBTQ+ community. It quickly grew into one of the largest Prides in Florida, drawing over 200,000 people in recent years. Since 2016, the event has carried an even deeper meaning, honoring the 49 lives lost at Pulse nightclub. Vigils, tributes, and community gatherings during Pride ensure that remembrance remains at the heart of the celebration.

For Orlando’s LGBTQ+ community, Pride is a moment of visibility, healing, and unity. For visitors like me, it’s inspiring to see a city transform its pain into a message of love and inclusion, making Orlando Pride one of the most heartfelt celebrations in the U.S.

Whether you live in Florida, another southern state or anywhere else in the country, you won't want to miss all the excitement of the Orlando Pride festivities. Finding information on this event is sometimes hard because the soccer team in the city uses the same name, but once you learn about all the fun you can have at Orlando Pride, you'll want to add the date to your calendar. This is the main festival in Florida for the LGBTQ community, and one of the oldest pride events in the south.

The Metropolitan Business Association (MBA) saw the need for a pride festival in Orlando. Leaders working for that organization, which consists of LGBTQ business leaders, created Come Out With Pride, Inc. (COWP) as a nonprofit group that would offer opportunities for gays and lesbians in the area. COWP would later establish the Orlando Pride Parade and all the other fun events that take place in the early part of October. The group chose the first weekend in October because it was close to National Coming Out Day, and would encourage recent additions to the community to come out and have fun too.

Though the festival itself only takes place over the weekend, there are plenty of events to occupy your time earlier in the week. Past events included screenings of LGBTQ films and a drag race that raised money for charity. Come Out With Pride hosts a parade that runs around Lake Eola and along the promenade. You'll also find a late afternoon recovery party, which is the perfect place to relax and recuperate before you head back home. If you only attend one pride event in Florida, you'll want to make it the celebration in Orlando.
