For millions of people in the world Easter is celebrated today Sunday, April 24. Orthodox Christians in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East celebrate it later than in the Western world.

Sadly, in Ukraine the celebration was put on the back burner because of the war that country is suffering from Russia. The conflict has not prevented Christians from praying for those on the front lines and the citizens who did not leave their homes.

"We'll celebrate Easter no matter what, no matter much horror," said Kateryna Lazarenko, 68, in the northern village of Ivanivka outside Chernihiv, where ruined Russian tanks still littered the roads.

What is Orthodox Easter?

Both celebrations are Christian, both celebrate the resurrection of Jesus, the most important date in the Christian calendar. The Eastern Orthodox church is based on the Julian calendar proposed by Julius Caesar in 46 BC, instead of the Gregorian calendar which is the one adopted by the Catholic Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. This is the reason why Easter falls later in the Orthodox Church than in the Western Church.

With Orthodox Christians the preparation begins with the Great Lent, 40 days of reflection, which begins on Clean Monday and ends with Lazarus Saturday. Clean Monday means the cleansing of all sins. Lazarus Saturday falls eight days before Easter Sunday and signifies the end of Great Lent, although the fasting continues into Holy Week.

Next comes Palm Sunday, one week before Easter, remembering the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, followed by Holy Week, which ends on Easter Sunday.

How is Greek Easter celebrated?

They go to church, which is very important for them. The most important prayers begin with the ringing of bells and fireworks, indicating the resurrection of Christ.

Food is a fundamental part of the celebration, they eat roasted lamb with barbecue sauce and Tsoureki, a type of sweet bread.

In Serbia they enjoy smoked meats, cheeses, boiled eggs and red wine; in Russia they eat the traditional Paskha cake.

In the East, red eggs signify the blood that Jesus shed on the cross as redemption for all human beings; while in the West eggs are a symbol of the beginning of a new life.
