Our Cinque Terre Map
View of Monterosso from the Porto Roca Hotel.Click for details. The Cinque Terre, a name that translates to Five Lands, is one of Italy's most romantic treasures. This slice of heaven takes a few delightful ingredients: ancient, picturesque villages; hillsides overlooking the azure Mediterranean Sea; olive groves and terraced vineyards; and awe-inspiring mountain scenery combine to create a buffet for the senses.
The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre are Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. They cling tenaciously to the rugged Ligurian cliffs, and their colorful buildings seemingly cascade down the steep hillsides.
The enchantment of the Cinque Terre lies not only in its stunning villages but also in its pristine natural surroundings. The entire region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it's easy to see why. Its dramatic landscapes, with terraced vineyards and olive groves, frame the villages and provide an extraordinary backdrop to the turquoise waters of the Ligurian Sea.
Past and present blend into one to create a timeless allure that captivates all who visit. In fact, one could confidently assert that Cinque Terre ranks among the most beautiful places not just in Europe but in the entire world. If you're planning a trip to Italy, this is a destination you cannot afford to miss.
To aid your exploration of this captivating region, I've created a detailed Cinque Terre map; scroll further down the page for that. This map will prove invaluable in locating the enchanting villages, charming hotels, and pristine beaches highlighted in our Comprehensive Cinque Terre Guide.
For those with an appetite for more Italian adventures, my Liguria Beach Guide offers insights and recommendations to enhance your exploration of this gorgeous region.
The Cinque Terre: The Towns to Visit
Monterosso al Mare
The largest of the five villages, Monterosso al Mare, boasts a beautiful beach with its own lively promenade. The village's medieval center features narrow streets and beautiful churches, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Monterosso is also known for its exceptional seafood, so don't miss the opportunity to savor the day's fresh catch.
Vernazza
Vernazza is often considered the most picturesque of the five villages, with its charming harbor, vibrant piazza, and the remains of the Doria Castle overlooking the village. It's a delightful place to relax, enjoy a gelato, or sample some of the region's delectable pesto. The harbor provides a beautiful setting for a leisurely meal, and it's a favorite spot for photographers.
Corniglia
Perched on a cliff, Corniglia offers a unique perspective on the Cinque Terre. Unlike the other villages, which have direct access to the sea, Corniglia is situated high above the water. The main square, Largo Taragio, is the heart of the village, surrounded by charming restaurants and cafes.
Manarola
Manarola, with its iconic bell tower and colorful buildings, is a postcard-perfect village. The small harbor is a lovely place to relax, and it's famous for its delightful swimming spots. As the sun sets, the village becomes even more magical, with soft lights illuminating the charming streets and creating a romantic ambiance.
Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore is the southernmost village and an excellent starting point for hikers exploring the Sentiero Azzurro, the famous coastal trail connecting all five villages. The village itself boasts a picturesque harbor, a lovely main street, and several shops where you can find local products and crafts.
