The third season of Outlander saw Claire Fraser (played by Caitriona Balfe) struggle with life in the 20th Century as she longed to be back in Scotland with Jamie (Sam Heughan). Instead, she spent her time in Boston raising her daughter Brianna (Sophie Skelton) with her first husband Frank (Tobias Menzies). Eventually, after Frank died, Claire made the decision to go back and find Jamie once she heard he survived the battle of Culloden. It wasn’t long until her daughter followed her through the stones.

When Claire arrived in the 18th Century, she immediately sought out Jamie and found him at a printing shop in Edinburgh.

Jamie was both thrilled and stunned to see his wife return to him and even more staggered when he learned their daughter had grown up.

Claire went on to show him photographs of Brianna as a child and as a student with her flowing red locks.

Jamie was overcome with emotion as he looked at his daughter’s image, however, fans noticed he seemed to forget what she looked like in season four.

Claire and Jamie head to the West Indies to find Young Ian (John Bell), who was captured while retrieving jewels off the coast of Scotland.

They eventually reunited with Young Ian and went on to settle in North Carolina.

It was there that Brianna caught up with her parents when she stumbled upon Jamie in the town.

At first, Jamie is wart of Brianna as he doesn’t immediately recognise her.

Now some fans have slammed the moment saying Jamie would definitely recognise his daughter after being given photos of her.

Redditor Rumpleko1 wrote: “I apologise if this is a repeat as I’m new to outlander universe.

“Why didn’t Jaimie recognise Brianna right away? He had seen pictures of her and it struck me as odd that he wouldn’t recognise her.”

But other fans were quick to defend Jamie insisting it was a bizarre situation to be in.

“He simply wasn’t expecting to see her in his lifetime, so it being Bree wasn’t a tangible option in his mind. He recognised her as soon as she said her name though,” one hit back.

Another added: “Seen somebody in pictures vs recognising her out of blue in real life are two very different things, especially if you never expect to see her, and she dresses completely differently from the pictures.”

“Because it was so out of place. The last thing he planned to see was Bree walking down the street,” a third added.

When Jamie did realise who Brianna was she was taken to the Ridge to reunite with her mother and reveal she knew how the pair died.

The couple are set to die in a fire at the Big House but one fan pointed out their obituary could be a cover story or mistake.

The fan explained: "I am so confused about a couple things in A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

"At one point, on the night that the obituary says they'll die in a fire, they all gather in the cabin... and Major MacDonald shows up.

"Small fire happens, but nothing crazy. I can't remember which month this is.

"Later, in the final chapters of the book, the big house burns down from the ether. They said it's the 22nd of December."

The obituary has different dates suggesting the paper did burn down but wasn’t sure if Claire and Jamie were dead. Either way, Tom Christie simply wanted to make sure the pair were remembered.

Outlander season 5 continues Sundays on STARZ and follows Mondays on Amazon Prime Video in the UK.
