Planning Work for Metal Gate or Grill Painting?

Step 1: Check the surface and condition

Before painting, first check if the paint surface and metal door or metal grill are in acceptable condition.

Any corroded surface or paint stripping off may require you to remove or scrap off the peeling paint and corroded area first before painting. This protects you from further hassle down the road when the base coat of paint starts to come off, leading to double work and unnecessary headache.

Step 2: Clean the Surface of the Gate/Metal Grills

The outside of the metal gate should be spotless and free from stain, residue or oil. After these are removed, use sandpaper to sand down before painting.

Step 3: Apply Primer ( Zinc-Chromate) to Gate/Grill

If the current paint surface is corroded or peeling and the underneath base metal is exposed, apply a significant thick coat of primer (oil based) to ensure your paint will have good adhesion the metal surface.

Step 4: Apply Your Oil Paint ( Gloss) to Gate/Grill

Select the preferred colour of paint you need and apply the oil based paint with brush or paint roller for a thin coat. Repeat a second thicker coat after the first coat has dried.

Step 5: Drying Time ( Wet Paint)

Do allow surface drying time of at least 4 hours for the wet paint. Stop others from entering or exiting these doors / gates to avoid touching the wet paint. Ensure no moisture, rain or dust gets onto the paint during this time.
