Hi, Can anyone please tell me what paint I should be using to paint over silicone sealant? I used it, perhaps unwisely, to fill the gaps when putting up coving and 'normal' water based paint wickes off the sealant. Is acrylic based paint the way to go? Thanks for any tips. B

you cant the only solution is to take paiters mate http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/sea/searchresults.jsp;jsessionid=G3SHRWOXG20FPCJO2C1SIIQ?dyncharset=UTF-8&q=&n=49745&pn=1&pd=1&pi=1&cn=1&cd=1&x=10&y=7 and put a small thin film over the silicon to cover it big all T

Or rake the silicon out and start again with painters mate (caulk). I would use big alls suggestion, I have done it in the past to cover this problem. M

You can do it. If you use an oil based paint, thin it 50/50 and use that as a cover coat. Will depend on the type of silicon, and will only work with oil based paint. Mr. Handyandy - really H

I use dulux trade upvc paint (only available in white) to paint over silicon first as it works well and doesnt bead...... P

The whole point of silicon is that nothing will stick to it. You can make paints cover it but not long term. I have a theory about silicon...that it is like silicon breast implants...that one day it will all start breaking down. The day that starts to happens to construction silicon, there will be whole houses that will fall down. Dig it out (or use silicon remover) and caulk it - on coving, complete mistake, no perhaps about it. The place to use it is between bath and tiles or worktop and tiles. Cait J

Thanks for the tips. I dug it out and used that decorators caulk as recommended. Good stuff that. Lesson learned. Cheers, Jon S

painters mate or decorators caulk? rubbish when covered with acrylic or emullsion paint.they will only last a few months before cracking or peeling. it takes oil based paint to cover these cosmetics. P

Hey slap, so what do you suggest...OK, you can run filler in there but it cracks too. We use caulk all the time, we have clients that we go back to on a regular basis, probably 2 or 3 times a year, if it cracked open every time, we'd not be asked back....and I don't see much evidence of it happening except above or around areas like Agas etc. If it's used properly and most importantly allowed to dry properly then it's fine provided there's not excessive expansion/contraction or movement in which case filler/plaster would be out too. As I said, the most important thing is to allow it to dry out properly, most folk don't let it...just wack paint over as soon as there's a skin...no wonder it peels. Oil based paint is far more brittle than acrylic...can't see why it would be better. Cait T

just to add about caulk, hopefully you decorators will agree it is important to prime before caulking to prevent it lifting. i have never had a problem doing it this way. P

I agree. T

Caulk will crack if it is not dry, Too often it is applied just before it is painted with a vinyl emulsion and then there is no where for the water to evaporate. Silicon is not paintable, I suspect that those who claim it is are confusing silicon, with the whole host of water based sealants around now that market themselves as silicons when they arn't H

tfi, upvc paint covers silicon (yes s-i-l-i-c-o-n), found this out when painting upvc windows which had been siliconed in with the stuff. I then tried it on another job, and it didnt bead, and covered it. Then when it dried I painted as normal. H

the upvc paint appears to be 'rubbery' when applied, and skins in no time. It skins so quick that its a pain to apply on a sunny day! D

Holman's distribute some very interesting products...and the scandinavians are streets ahead of most in paint technology so this wouldn't surprise me. Thanks for the tip. T

Just a little tip. If you want to stick something up, and paint over it, use solvent free gripfill (the one in the yellow tube). It sticks almost anything, and is great for filling bigger gaps. Best of all its designed to be paintable! I love to use this stuff when glueing skirting boards. You can stick and fill at the same time. Wonderfull stuff! J

Old tip on new puttied windows which needed painting quickly was to seal the newish putty with Patent Knotting. Then paint over after if sealed. Not much call for putty these days...:) Rs R
