Mechanics[]

Parrots spawn in jungle biomes, and can also be spawned using parrot spawn eggs (only in Creative). They can be red, green, blue, cyan, or gray in color. They move around by flying, but will always eventually land.[1] They cannot walk, but can swim by flapping their wings (similar to chickens), to avoid drowning. If a hostile mob is nearby, they will look in its direction and imitate the sound of the mob (though in a higher pitch). If untamed, they will often cluster around a non-parrot mob.

When a jukebox is playing music, parrots will "dance" (as if a player is holding right-click); when the music ends, every affected parrot stops dancing. This is a reference to a meme which was popular at Mojang studios called "Party Parrot".[2]

Taming[]

Players can tame a parrot by giving them Seeds. Any seed will do, including cocoa beans, despite the fact that they are a component in cookies. Once tamed, a parrot will follow a player around, and teleport to their side if they move too far away. Walking into a parrot will cause it to ride on a player's shoulder. At random intervals, a tamed parrot may attempt to sit on a players shoulder unless told to stay (sit). In order to get a parrot off one's shoulder, a player needs only to lose height (e.g. jumping, travelling downhill, flying downward with elytra, or by using a firework rocket). A parrot can be ordered to sit by right-clicking on them (PC). If a parrot is fed a cookie, it will instantly die and emit poison particles. If the parrot was tamed at the time it died, a server message will display: "Parrot was slain by <Player>."

Trivia[]

  • Although chocolate is toxic to birds in real life, cookies were used to tame them in previous snapshots. This had been changed before the full 1.12 release, as developers realized that people (particularly children) were likely encouraged to feed their pet parrots chocolate (which could kill them).[3] The cookies were initially used because it was a reference to the phrase "Polly wants a cracker".[4]
  • The parrot model was designed by Razz.
  • Parrots are based on macaws, but with a Minecraft styling.[5]
  • Each of the parrot's variants are similar to the different types of parrots found in real life.
    • The red parrot is similar to the Scarlet Macaw.
    • The cyan parrot is similar to the Blue and Yellow Macaw.
    • The blue parrot is similar to the Hyacinth Macaw.
    • The gray parrot is similar to the Cockatiel.
    • The green parrot is similar to the Kakapo.
  • If a player rides a horse with a parrot on their shoulder, the parrot will not get off of the player even if the horse jumps about 5 blocks in the air. The only way for the parrot to get off is for the player to either die or just get off the horse. The parrot will also get off of a player if it dies.
  • If a jukebox is played, the parrot will dance.
  • In Pirate Speak, the parrot is called Your Best Mate. This refers to the common depiction of pirates with pet parrots.
