Preseason Week 2 Patriots at Eagles final score: Quarterbacks shine in New England’s 35-0 win

The New England Patriots’ second leg of their three-game preseason tour around the NFC East ended with a convincing victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Patriots, who held joint practices with their opponent earlier this week, dominated on both sides of the ball en route to a 35-0 victory.

First quarter

Philadelphia won the coin toss to kick off tonight’s proceedings, electing to receive the ball to start the game. The Patriots starting defensive unit included familiar names to last week alongside a couple of players making their preseason debuts in Christian Barmore and Devin McCourty.

On the third play from scrimmage, Philadelphia quarterback Joe Flacco’s was strip sacked by Matthew Judon following a botched snap. Former Eagle Jalen Mills recovered the fumble.

New England’s offense, led by Cam Newton, was set up nicely from there, as Damien Harris punched the ball into the end zone from five yards out just two plays later. [Patriots 7 : 0 Eagles]

Kyle Van Noy and Carl Davis combined for a run stuff on third-and-1 to force a three and out on the Eagles’ second possession of the night. The following Patriots drive lasted seven plays, moving them down to the Philadelphia 18-yard line before eventually stalling out. Quinn Nordin pushed his ensuing 36-yard attempt wide right.

The Eagles’ third possession resulted in their second, three-and-out. That proceeded another well run drive by Newton, who led the Patriots offense 66 yards down the field on eight plays, capping things off with a 28-yard catch and run by Jakobi Meyers. Second quarter

Prior to the start of the second quarter, Patriots linebacker Josh Uche departed to the locker room.

The Eagles’ were facing yet another short drive to open the second quarter, but were saved by a roughing the passer penalty assessed to Chase Winovich in his first defensive snap of the preseason. Philadelphia carried the drive into the red zone before being stopped on a 4th-and-3 play from inside the ten. Kyle Dugger got his hands on a pass into the end zone, dropping a could be interception.

Mac Jones took over on the Patriots’ fourth possession of the night, ending Cam Newton’s evening after three series. He was 8-for-9 passing, for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Jones’ first drive presented a few challenges for the rookie, who was nearly picked off on his first pass attempt of the night, but immediately rebounded by connecting with wide receiver N’Keal Harry for a 19 yards on 3rd-and-13. Jones connected on four more passes, leading the offense on a 91-yard touchdown drive, spanning 17 plays over the course of 9:04. A vintage drive from the New England offense. Sony Michel and Rhamondre Stevenson both stood out on the drive. The Patriots coaching staff kept the pair fresh by substitution a regular basis. They helped their rookie quarterback out tremendously.

The Eagles offense was left with just over 2:00 in the half, looking to execute two-minute drill with their second team offense. Flacco and co. picked up a few first downs but a Harvey Langi interception on a deflected pass gave New England the ball around the 50-yard line with 0:38 left in the half.

A long attempt to N’Keal Harry went incomplete as the wide receiver landed directly on his left shoulder sprawling for the pass. He stayed down for a moment before leaving the field. The Patriots punted, ending the half with a 19-0 lead.

Third quarter

The Patriots opened up the second half on offense, starting out at the 25-yard line following a touchback. Mac Jones came back out to lead the offense, this time with a new group of receivers consisting of Kristian Wilkerson, Devin Ross, and J.J. Taylor. Jones was in rhythm connecting on all six of his pass attempts. Taylor punctuated the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Rookie kicker Quinn Nordin missed yet another PAT. [Patriots 25 : 0 Eagles]

Nick Mullins replaced Joe Flacco at quarterback for the Eagles in the second half.

The Patriots defense ended the Eagles’ first drive of the third quarter rather quickly, as Harvey Langi and Chase Winovich recorded back to back sacks on Mullins before Philadelphia could cross the 50-yard line.

The Patriots following drive was another vintage performance as Mac Jones matriculated the ball down the field, before Rhamondre Stevenson capped off yet ANOTHER touchdown drive. Nordin connected on his PAT. [Patriots 32 : 0 Eagles]

Another Philadelphia three-and-out gave the Patriots the ball heading into the fourth quarter. Brian Hoyer took over for Mac Jones at quarterback. Jones ended his night going 13-of-16, with 146 yards over four possessions.

Fourth quarter

Brian Hoyer continued the trend for Patriots quarterbacks, putting together another solid drive for the offense, keeping the ball out of harms way and making smart passes. The drive would eventually stall out at the 6-yard line, setting Quinn Nordin up for a chip shot field goal. [Patriots 35 : 0 Eagles]

The Eagles offense suffered yet another three play drive, stalling out before ever getting started. The Patriots took over with 7:35 left in the game. Time for the 4-minute drill.

On the second play of the Patriots ensuing drive, Rhamondre Stevenson fumbles to give the ball right back to the Eagles. A teaching moment for the young running back who had a great night up to that point.

After picking up a few first downs, Philadelphia was on the verge of once again being stopped by the Patriots defense. Instead, a pair of holding penalties on Dee Virgin and Michael Jackson Jr. extended the drive. . . for one more play, as Adrian Colbert picked off Nick Mullins with just over 3-minutes left in the game.

The Patriots offense was given another opportunity to execute 4-minute drill, looking to burn the clock down to 0:00. A couple of first downs, and a few kneel downs later, the Patriots win!
