Ingredients

You only need a bag of frozen peas for this simple recipe. We have also included some ideas of what to add for extra flavour.

Frozen peas

Frozen peas are best to use for this recipe, picked and flash-frozen when they are at their sweetest.

Use either frozen petit pois or frozen garden peas; avoid using fresh peas.

Frozen peas in a saucepan with water being on top

Water

Water is needed to cook the peas in. Reserve some cooking water to help create the desired consistency.

So that is all that is needed peas and water! Now for the optional extras for more flavour!

Stock

You can cook the peas in vegetable or chicken stock instead of boiled water for extra flavour.

Salt and pepper

Season to taste with salt and pepper

Butter

Adding butter during blending helps give the puree a creamy texture and richer flavour.

Cooked peas, butter and mint jelly in a bowl

Mint

Adding mint jelly, mint sauce, or freshly chopped mint leaves gives a fresh sweet flavour giving you a minted pea puree. Perfect served with lamb.

Herbs and Spices

Try adding herbs or spices to suit what you are planning to serve.

Garlic

Garlic puree or roasted garlic added during blending helps give extra depth.

Cooking Tips

Add frozen peas to a pan of cold water bring to a boil. Once the water has boiled, turn to a simmer for two minutes.

Drain the peas -reserving some water or stock to add if needed.

Pouring cooked peas into a sieve over a jug

Place the drained peas into a food processor or use a handheld blender

Add salt & pepper and any additional flavourings you want to use, and blend to your desired consistency.

Puree Consistency

You can add more liquid to the pea puree to make it more fluid, depending on what you are serving it with?

Thick pea puree blended without water added.

When served as a vegetable side dish alternative to mash potato or rice, keep it thick with minimal water or stock added, as seen above.

Blending pea puree in a glass bowl with an electric whisk

If using pea puree as a sauce to decorate your recipe, add more liquid to make it more fluid.

Add small splashes of water and blend, adding more until you have your desired consistency.

Smooth Texture

If using as a side sauce for decorating or serving younger children, you may want to make the sauce smoother.

Using a silicone spatula and sieve to create a smooth pea puree into a white bowl

Pass the blended peas through a fine sieve to remove any unwanted lumps, and your pureed peas will be super silky smooth!

Using a silicone spatula helps push the blended peas through the sieve.

Serving Suggestions

Pea purée is a great way to add bright green colour and a naturally sweet flavour to your meals. It's perfect as a healthy side dish or a decorative sauce on starters or main courses.

Baby Food Pea Puree

Our recipe can also be used to create pureed pea baby food. Simply follow the steps above but avoid using stock, butter or adding salt and pepper to keep it natural.

To make it more palatable and creamy for the baby, add the peas to a blender with a splash of breast or formula milk instead of water.

You should pass it through a sieve to make it extra smooth for your baby.

Storage

Once made, store pea puree in the fridge covered for two days or frozen for three months.

Ice cube trays

We like to portion into ice cube trays. Once frozen, pea cubes can be transferred to a freezer-safe bag and stored for three months.

When you are ready to use, simply remove as many cubes as you need and defrost them in the fridge or microwave.

A great way to always have some on hand, and it's perfect for when you only need a small amount!

We hope you enjoy this pea recipe as much as we do. Let us know in the comments below if you have any questions or suggestions.

Happy cooking!
