The long-awaited second instalment of Peacemaker has come to an end.

In season 2, James Gunn, the writer and showrunner for the show, didn’t hold back on the black humour, deep DC lore, violent fights and glam rock songs, giving fans everything they loved about this series.

The final episode of the season ended on a massive cliffhanger, and left fans asking one question: when is season 3 coming? Well, the answer to this question is not easy to determine – but we’ve rounded up what we know so far.

Will there be Peacemaker season 3?

Sadly, James Gunn hasn’t provided a clear answer to this question. The cliffhanger at the season 2 finale is intended to lay the groundwork for the next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, rather than for season 3.

In the Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, James Gunn stated:

This is the final episode of Peacemaker season two; maybe the final episode of Peacemaker.

We are true believers in Peacemaker, the television show and these characters. Peacemaker will be back. As this TV show? We’ll see exactly what form. We have plans, but you’ll see all these characters in the future of the DCU, and not too long.

It means that although Peacemaker will undoubtedly reappear in future DC productions, his standalone series may not get renewed for another season.

Gunn confirmed his earlier statement in an interview with Deadline:

No, this is about the wider DCU and other stories in which this will play out right now. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be. I don’t want to never say never, but right now, no, this is about the future of the DCU. It’s an important character.

It seems that although Gunn isn’t ruling out a third season of Peacemaker, the overall development of the DC universe is his priority. Therefore, a new instalment of the series may arrive, but it’s unlikely to happen in the near future.

Man of Tomorrow is slated to premiere on 9 July 2027. So, if Peacemaker season 3 were to arrive, it will almost certainly be after summer 2027.

What could Peacemaker season 3 be about?

If Peacemaker returns for a third season, its plot may be influenced by other DC productions. So far, James Gunn has confirmed the releases of the following productions:

• Lanterns TV Series (Early 2026)
• Supergirl (26 June 2026)
• Clayface (11 September 2026)
• Man of Tomorrow (9 July 2027)
• The Batman Part II (1 October 2027)
• Dynamic Duo (Animated Robin Origin Movie) (30 June 2028)

It’s unknown whether Chris and his friends will appear in any of the above films and series, but it looks likely – especially for Superman 2. Regardless of if season 3 is made or not, we need to find out how the following storylines continue:

Chris being trapped on Salvation

In the Peacemaker season 2 finale, we finally learnt why Rick Flag Sr. was looking for an alternative, habitable world – his goal was to find a place that could become a prison for metahumans. In the final scenes of the season, Chris is kidnapped by the A.R.G.U.S. team and, as part of Rick’s revenge for killing his son, is left on Salvation, a prison planet.

James Gunn has already revealed that Salvation will play a key role in the DC universe – it’s confirmed that the planet will appear in Man of Tomorrow. In the comics, this alternate world was featured in a series published from 2007 to 2008, which covered the adventures of many famous superheroes and villains.

As James Gunn says (via Variety):

It really is about the concept. The part that really spoke to me was the beginning of it, where Rick Flag Jr. and Amanda Waller [said], ‘Fuck it. Metahumans are a pain in the ass. They keep escaping. Let’s just get rid of them permanently.’ And of course, there are a bunch of repercussions about sending a bunch of bad guys to another dimension. In this case, kind of, you know, the sole person there right now is a good guy who has to survive on his own.

What will happen to Chris on Salvation? What creatures inhabit this unexplored planet? Will Peacemaker manage to escape the prison? We may find out in Man of Tomorrow, but if not, the storyline will have to continue in season 3 of the series.

The Checkmate Agency

The so-called 11th Street Kids – Chris, Adebayo, Harcourt, Economos, and Adrian – established an independent agency to fight crime called Checkmate. They were joined by agent Sasha Bordeaux, Judomaster, and agent Langston Fleury, who are disillusioned with working for A.R.G.U.S.

As it turns out, the Checkmate Agency will be another storyline, after Salvation, that will appear in the new DC universe. Gunn stated (via Variety):

It’s the real culmination of the 11th Street Kids and their desire to be good. I think they’re going to be really, really good at what they do. When we see them next, their circumstances will be a little bit different than the startup that they’re at now.

If Peacemaker season 3 gets made, we’ll definitely see the agency in action. It’s also possible that Checkmate will play a key role in freeing Chris from Salvation.

Keith’s revenge

Even if Chris escapes from the prison planet, it doesn’t mean he’s free from any danger. In an alternate dimension, which turned out to be a Nazi version of the United States, remains Keith Smith – seeking revenge on Peacemaker and his friends for killing his brother and father.

To find the dimension where the 11th Street Kids live, Keith would have to find a way to open a multiverse portal – perhaps this may happen in the third season. One of the themes of Peacemaker is family trauma. Therefore, the brother from an alternate reality seeking revenge would be a good topic for the series’ next instalment.

Chris and Emilia’s love story

At the end of season 2, Chris finally hooked up with agent Harcourt. Although it can’t be called a relationship yet, Peacemaker and Emilia definitely went on a date to a Foxy Shazam concert. We hope that their romance will thrive in the next season.
