People Treated Me Like A Criminal refers to a popular Vine from 2013, the audio of which got popular on TikTok in 2020. The Vine, a parody of Macklemore's "Same Love," features a young girl with her head in her hands fake crying, saying, "When I was in the third-grade people treated me like a criminal." The girl then quickly lifts her head from her hands, points a toy gun toward the camera, and yells, "Because I killed somebody."

Origin

In August of 2013, Macklemore's hit song "Same Love" became the subject of parodies on Vine. These parodies saw users comedically alter the lyrics, "When I was in the third grade I thought that I was gay 'cause I could draw / My uncle was and I kept my room straight." The parodies went viral, with outlets like MTV[1] publishing articles on the trend. On August 19th, YouTuber Martins Zagars[2] uploaded a compilation of these parodies to his channel, garnering over 495,000 views by September 23rd, 2020 (shown below).

On August 19th, 2013, Vine user Torrei Hart[3] uploaded the parody video featuring her daughter to Vine, accompanied with the tags #macklemore and #samelove. At the time of Vine's shut down, the video received over 2.3 million loops, 263,000 revines, and 307,000 likes. The Vine was reuploaded to YouTube numerous times, and is included in many Vine compilations. The most popular reupload was uploaded by YouTuber benjaminbear[4] on April 8th, 2015 (shown below).

On June 22nd, 2020, TikToker kokichis.poopypants[5] uploaded Torrei Hart's Vine to his TikTok page, but with Killua's face from Hunter X Hunter pasted over the face of Hart's daughter (shown below). The video garnered over 3.8 million views and 397,000 likes in three months.

Following this video, TikTokers began recreating the Vine using kokichis.poopypants' original sound, titled "BeCaUsE I KilLeD sOmEbOdY."[6] The sound was used in over 222,000 videos by September 23rd. The hashtag #peopletreatedmelikeacriminal also became popular, with videos under it reaching over 864,000 views.

Many TikTokers link the audio with videos of their pets. In the first half of these videos, the pets are behaving. As the line, "Because I killed somebody" comes up, the videos cut to footage of the pets misbehaving (popular examples shown below).
