How to Convert a Percent to a Decimal

Divide a percent by 100 and remove the percent sign to convert from a percent to a decimal.

Express 50% as a decimal

"Percent" means "per 100" or "over 100". So, to convert 50% to a decimal we rewrite 50 percent in terms of "per 100" or over 100.

50% = 50 over 100 or,

\[ 50\% = \frac{50}{100} \]

50/100 is the same as 50 divided by 100.

Completing the division we get:

50 ÷ 100 = 0.5

Therefore, we have shown that

50% = 0.5
