Persuasive Essay: Pitbulls Should Be Banned

The pit bull is a breed of dog with a reputation that has been skewed by misrepresentation of evidence and flat out lies. The pit bull has no inherent dangerous characteristics and banning it would make no progress in safety. It is common knowledge that all animals are controlled by their instincts. Dogs may bite or growl at a person to warn them, but if a person doesn’t listen to that warning, it is the person’s fault. Banning pit bulls will not change an animal’s natural instinct and make people safer. When news anchors report on a story involving a dog attack, they automatically assume that if the dog attacked, it must be a pitbull.This isn’t fair to this breed. We should be sure not to ban an entire breed because of popular perceptions and misunderstandings. Of course, it is understandable why people might be nervous about pitbulls, and the danger they might represent. A five year review of dog attack victims admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia indicated that pit bull terriers were responsible for 51% of them. Then, when attacks happen they are widely reported by the media and the stories are blown out of proportion, scaring the people who view the reports. People should always be cautious with any animal, because all animals are capable of attacking people. Under the right circumstances, and dog can be violent. It is time to stop blaming all dog attacks on one breed, and instead, change the way we treat pit bulls, take a look at their owners and how they may be treating
