Lift Miami-Dade County Ban on Pitbulls!Decision Makers: Florida Governor +2The Issue
For many years, Pitbulls have been considered a “dangerous” and “killer” breed of dog, resulting in a ban in Miami-Dade County. This only means more dogs in shelters, more sweet, loving, caring dogs being euthanized because of their breed, which is something they have no control over. Many people in Miami-Dade are Pitbull lovers and cannot adopt and save a life because of this ban. Pitbulls are NOT hardwired to be “killer” dogs. The next few things I will be talking about can be found in this article: http://love-a-bull.org/resources/the-history-of-pit-bulls/Pitbulls were originally bred in the United Kingdom. They were created to hunt things like rats, eventually people turned to dog fighting. When brought to the United States, Pitbulls became KEY for things like herding cattle, guarding livestock and families from thieves and other wild animals. Although through breeding they became known as “killers” the dogs were specifically bred to not bite humans and were actually considered “nanny dogs” at one point due to their loving, caring nature with adults and children alike. They then became more working companion dogs than dog fighting dogs. They were recognized by the US as brave, hardworking, and in general, the “All-American Dog.” They were also the nations mascot during the World Wars. They were even considered America’s sweethearts and were shown regularly on commercials, tv shows and movies that were very famous such as “The Little Rascals.” People took a dog that was built for love, companionship and hard work. And turned it into a dog that has been nationally feared. As humans, we have to realize these animals will only react the way they are trained to react. Dogs can be trained, can be shown right from wrong. They are sweet animals and should not be at fault for something they cannot control: their breed. People became careless, taking up dogfighting and displaying them as a danger to society when in reality, they want what every dog wants: a family. Breed Specific Legislation is only hurting us as a community rather than helping. Pitbulls flood the shelters of Miami-Dade county and many are euthanized for it. Many people genuinely love Pitbulls but cannot save them from the prisons they have been put in with death sentences. Visiting shelters you meet many Pitbulls, you can see they are afraid, hoping someone takes them home and gives them a family to love. But many are not so fortunate to find what they need and want. Lifting the BSL ban on Pitbulls in Miami-Dade County will save so many lives and give many people of our communities an opportunity to understand these misunderstood animals, to understand they are like any other dog. The amount of lives that will be saved will be worth the fight. My whole life I have loved all animals. From reptiles to mammals to anything you can think of. I love Pitbulls and have had in the past, they are sweet sweet angels. I would love to adopt one to make it an addition to my family and I am unable to because of the ban placed on the breed. It makes me very sad to walk the halls of the high-kill shelters and seeing all the beautiful, sweet and scared Pitbulls sitting there, hoping someone takes them. It’s time Miami-Dade County realizes that these dogs deserve love and should be treated with kindness. I don’t have a sob story, I don’t have a sad situation to speak about. All I have is a deep love for these animals and a passion and drive to save them from a life they don’t deserve and a situation that us humans put them in and are now blaming them for. They deserve better and we can and should give them better.
