Petroleum Coke Drying (Journal Article) - OSTI.GOV

It is desirable to dry petroleum coke in the refinery in order to avoid freeze-adhesion of the coke during transportation operations in the winter. Also, the use of dried coke in the calcining operation reduces the amount of coke burning and the fuel consumption and gives a 10-20% increase in capacity of the calcining units. In the reported experiments, the author has investigated the kinetics of drying a coke with an internal porosity of 45% in a laboratory unit in which a single spherical lump of coke was heated electrically while recording its weight continuously. The results of these studies are shown. It is shown that the first 4-5% of the moisture is taken off at a constant rate, regardless of the initial moisture content or the size of the coke lump. Subsequently, the rate of moisture removal drops off, the drop in rate being more pronounced for the lower initial moisture contents. Moisture is removed from large lumps more slowly than from small lumps. However, when the coke lump is heated for more than 30 min, the residual moisture content is dependent very little on lump size. The degree of coke drying is accelerated to the greatest degree by increasing the temperature. The optimal drying conditions are as follows: drying time 30-40 min, temperature 150-200/degree/C. 2 refs.
