What are Pigs and What Do they do in Minecraft

Pigs don’t have too many purposes other than providing the player with food and a few other materials. Pigs are the only source for Raw Porkchops, and can also be ridden with a saddle. Besides giving you a ride and providing you with food, pigs don’t offer anything else.

Quick Tips and Facts about Pigs

  • If a pig is struck by lighting, it’ll transform into a Zombified Piglin.

How to Find Pigs

Pigs are commonly found in all grassy biomes and if you’re lucky, you’ll find a pig at a village in the butcher’s house, pen, or in the stables.

To learn more about the different types of Biomes that are available to find across Minecraft, be sure to check out our Biomes guide for more details.

How to Breed a Pig

When breeding a pig, make sure that you’ve built a secure animal farm that they can’t escape from. Once you’ve done that you’ll need one of three foods: a potato, carrot, or beetroot for the pig to enter love mode. All of these foods are commonly found at villagers’ farms.

Once you have one of these food items in your hand, feed it to the pigs so they can enter love mode. After they enter love mode, a baby pig will spawn within a few seconds.

How to Ride a Pig

Riding a pig in Minecraft is fun to do, but untimely pointless because of how slow they go and their unwillingness to jump. To ride a pig you’ll need a saddle. Saddles are one of the few items in-game that can not be crafted. Once you have a saddle all you need to do is right click or press the left trigger to equip it on the pig.

To learn more about how to get a saddle, why not check out our Saddle Guide that details everything you need to know about obtaning a saddle in Minecraft.

Now that you have the saddle on, you’ll need to make a Carrot on a Stick to control where the pig goes.

All Pig Loot

When a pig is killed by a player or a tamed wolf, it can drop anywhere from one to three XP orbs. The pig will also drop the saddle if it has one when killed. Listed below are all the items a pig can drop upon death.

  • Raw Porkchops: 1-3 (cooked if killed by fire)

Pig Variants

New variants of Pigs have been added, and thus they will change dependent on which biome they spawn in. The details are as follows:

Keep in mind, that when bred by a player, a baby Pig variant will not be chosen by the current biome, but instead randomly selected from one of the parents' variants.
