Pit Bull Puppy Small For Age?

My baby is 5 months old and I was told he is a Pit Bull. I've had Pit Bulls my whole life. I know he is a Pit. I'm curious if he should be this size. He will be 6 months October 25th. He was the runt of the litter. The absolute smallest one. I'm not sure if he is supposed to be this size or if because he is the runt he may take longer to grow. Let me know what you all think!Advertisement

What an adorable pup! He may end up being a smaller dog, I have had pitbulls my entire life and we have had some that vary in size. Not all of them turn out to be as big as the "mainstream" pits are now.
- Do you have him on a food specified for puppies? Puppy food tends to have a higher calorie count per serving to help with their body's needs. They grow and develop so fast, as well as all of the playing they do. This causes them to require a higher calorie intake for the day. Some puppy food also include vitamins that aid in the development process. Advertisement
- Has he been dewormed and had all of his vaccines? It is also very important to get him on a monthly preventive. These can prevent fleas, ticks, heartworm disease and intestinal parasites such as hookworms, roundworms, etc. There are many different kinds, I recommend discussing with your veterinarian which one would suit your pet best. Intestinal parasites can cause pets not to gain any weight.
- Ideal weight for every pet is different. It often doesn't go off a specific number on the scale but on their body scale. Your vet will be able to assess your pet by looking/feeling their body, rib area, etc. to tell you if your pet is at an ideal body scale, underweight or overweight for their age, breed, gender, etc.
I hope this was helpful!

Amber E.October 6, 20170 found this helpfulBest AnswerHe does seem somewhat skinny. We had the same issue with our dog. Turns out he was not dewormed when he was supposed to have been. They did it once as a puppy but never followed up before we got him. If a puppy has worms they eat alot but have a hard time gaining weight. They will often have a bloated belly and you may or may not see evidence of worms in their fecal matter. AdvertisementI would suggest contacting your local vet and voicing your concerns but just from my experience once our dog completed the cycle of dewormer medicine he was able to start gaining weight.
elizabethejv2619March 17, 20180 found this helpfulTo me he looks mixed with a beagle type dog. Look how his nose drops way down from the top of head.. And the shape. An also his little legs, look like the curvy little leg bones of a beagle or a basset hound. If you DNA test and he is not... I would get him checked for any type of dwarfism. Yes dogs can have that to. He looks like the size of a 3mth old pup. Most runts catch up pretty lucky, and or they end up being the biggest. Anyway it goes he is so cute. But it's good to know info, in case it is something medical.
AnonymousJuly 18, 20180 found this helpfulI have a pit and some pits are the little ruts until about 2 years old and they fill out so great. Make sure you give them liver. AdvertisementI give 3 oz a week and eggs and salmon for coat. You have a beautiful dog that will be sweet and loyal to you.
chapmanveronica722March 10, 20190 found this helpfulThank you for all of you sharing your story I have a pitbull to and she was the runt of the litter. She was super small like they haven't feed her she gaining weight after I feed her a bowl of goat milk everyday bowl chicken, rice and pumpkin I also gave her slices of apples for snack. She also get dewormed once a month and now she the size of my other pitbulls
c.ladydogAugust 26, 20190 found this helpfulYour puppy's weight looks just fine. Many Pitbull owners think their dogs are too skinny. They won't start getting wide until they're over a year of age. However the first photograph looks like your puppy has an overbite that means his front teeth stick out past his bottom teeth. AdvertisementHe may not be able to eat very well because of this. It could just be the way the photograph was taken but I would check that just to make sure.

- Normally, the runt of the litter can be smaller than the other dogs. This should be a problem if your dog is smaller.
- If you are worried about the dog, health, height, and weight you should go to see your vet.
- The dog could look healthy, but there could be a medical condition that only your vet can see.
- Normally, baby dogs feed twice a day for the frist 6 months.
- If you dog is small he could be running and not getting enough food to help him grow.
- You can try feeding him 3 times a day to see if this helps his size and growth.
megan.a.mcconahyJune 5, 20180 found this helpfulHe looks the same size as my female! She refuses to eat her puppy food tho, she eats my 2 yr old males food
friss.billAugust 11, 20190 found this helpfulMy 6 month old Staffordshire/red nose is about 75-80 pounds. White with brown spot. Friendly to everything. Always wanting to be loved and be funny. Even loves cats.
richardwalston7887April 14, 20220 found this helpfulWell I have a pit just like this far as I can tell she's healthy but her size concerned me also being that slayer her brother is massive and same age
macd400June 5, 20220 found this helpfulThe smaller the better.
nicolechristensen6September 11, 20220 found this helpfulI know this is 5 years old but I was wondering if you ever figured out what your pup was? DNA? My girl looks exactly like you dog and they have no idea what she is (she is a rescue). AdvertisementWe're thinking pit, boxer and something else
retsuno21September 22, 20230 found this helpfulThey could be mixed with Patterdale Terriers, as many people are trying to re-create the original pitbull small size and looks.
Either way, great dogs. Tiny is sometimes better =)
