Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that all people would be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Well, I have a dream that all dogs will be judged by their integrity and not by their outward appearance. Unfortunately, pit bulls have suffered for many years because people continue to believe the faulty stereotype that all pit bulls are aggressive. The truth is many individuals aren't informed about pit bulls. Many people believe the pit bull is a specific dog, but the pit bull describes different dogs including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and American Bully as stated by the Villalobos Rescue Center. A typical pit bull is strong, athletic, …show more content…
Not only are the dogs’ notoriety hurt, but their physical and emotional well-being is harmed too. While walking my sister’s pitbulls at a dog park, I saw many people walk away from us or watch the dogs carefully in fear. Also, a few of our guests have expressed their fear of the dogs simply because they were pit bulls. Unfortunately, dogs can sense anxiety and tension; emotional trauma can result from the neglect and lack of attention. According to Judy Cohen and John Richardson, the pit bull has been portrayed as ‘‘the archetype of canine evil, predators of the defenseless. Unpredictable companions that kill and maim without discretion. Walking horror shows bred with an appetite for violence” (285). Also, 65% of people surveyed by Cohen and Richardson also say even pit bulls who seem good-natured can suddenly turn vicious (285). Because of this negative perspective about pit bulls, the dogs’ lives are endangered. Dr. Emily Weiss collected data from a variety of dog shelters and found that pitbulls are the most euthanized breed in shelters. Over 25,000 pitbulls were put to death in 45 shelters in 2014; the next highest euthanized breed was the labrador retriever at only 7,000 dogs. Many people have wrongfully given pit bulls a false reputation because they believe these dogs are naturally cold-hearted, and these poor dogs continue to suffer as a …show more content…
Pit bulls are amazing family additions, and they are truly loving and protective. According to researchers at the Institute for Animal Welfare and Behavior pit bulls are harmless. The test results of 415 dogs were analyzed. The test consisted of a veterinary examination; a learning test; situations of dog-human, dog-environment, and dog-dog contact; and obedience. Escalation in aggressive behavior was scored using a scale of 1-7. The results show no indication of dangerousness in specific breeds, so pit bulls are just as innocent as the common golden retriever (Schalke et al. 97-103). Another study by a Georgia-based group called the American Temperament Test Society has put twenty-five thousand dogs through a ten-part standardized drill designed to assess a dog’s stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness in the company of people. A handler takes a dog on a six-foot lead and judges its reaction to stimuli such as gunshots, an umbrella opening, and a weirdly dressed stranger approaching in a threatening way. Eighty-four per cent of the pit bulls that have been given the test have passed, which ranks pit bulls ahead of beagles, Airedales, bearded collies, and all but one variety of dachshund (Gladwell 26-28). Studies have proven that pit bulls are loving, friendly pets if they are treated right. My sister’s two pit bulls live in her household as well her toddler, Camden. Her son

The Pros And Cons Of Banning Pit Bulls
The Pros And Cons Of Banning Pit Bulls
206). Further research shows that Pit Bulls aren’t the most dangerous breed of dog. They are ranked higher for their tolerance than they are for their aggression (Baldwin, S. 2016). No matter what real facts and statistics say, Pit Bulls are still being discriminated against and banned all around the world. As the years, have gone on, it has been harder and harder to own a Pit Bull. Many neighborhood or apartment complexes won’t allow you to live in their facilities if you own a Pit Bull or anything that remotely looks like a Pit Bull. If that isn’t enough, most insurance agencies won’t cover you, your family or your home if you own a Pit Bull (ReidHead, J, L 2017). Because of all these regulations and limitation when owning a Pt Bull, owners and Pit Bull advocates are working harder to push their point that it’s the owner that makes the dog. With proper training and responsible owners Pit Bulls are not a threat or a danger to society. Pit Bulls are no more dangerous than any dog breed with they are trained and raised responsibly. In this paper, I be explaining how irresponsible Pit Bull owners are the cause of Pit Bulls aggression towards people and other animals by explaining the history of the breed, Pit Bulls involvement in dog fighting, gang violence and true statistics surrounding the breed. To solve this problem, I recommend that all future and

Cesar Millan who has his own show on Nat Geo Wild called Cesar 911 works and owns his own pit bulls. He has had a dog named daddy who was raised with Cesar since 4 months old. Cesar had a large pack of dogs so it made daddy well socialized and never aggressive with other dogs. Daddy with two small boys of Cesar’s laying and sleeping on daddy he got the best play time with his kids and was calm and soft with Cesar’s kids. If other dogs were being mean to him he would just walk away and not start anything(Millan). With that in mind I feel that pit bulls are misunderstood and can be very good pets if raised with the correct and proper training. These dogs might look mean and aggressive If the dog is trained by someone to fight they will take the most time to open up.

Should Pit Bulls Be Banned From America?
Pit Bulls are known worldwide for being inherently dangerous and extremely vicious, but according to the American Temperament Test Society, Inc. 86.8% of American Pit Bull Terriers have passed their temperament tests better than Collies, Golden Retrievers, and Beagles. Many people don’t know that the term “bully breed” refers to more than forty breeds that hail from the same root breed. The history of the Pit Bull goes back to about the nineteenth century, during that time they were used to protect livestock, families, and even children as nannies (the Canine Journal). Do Pit Bulls Make Good Pets? Essay
The main reason pit bulls attack is because they are mentally unstable, a mixed breed and show overbearing traits, or because they are mistreated by their owners. The public must understand that the three “pit bull breeds were bred for dog fighting and bear and bull-baiting” (PBRC). On the other hand, they were also kept as “nanny dogs” and used for herding cattle. “Pit bulls are ideal for therapy work because of their pleasant nature” (PBRC). These are three of the most stable breeds known to man. They have a very high temperament test score, 86% as of 2010, a lot higher than most breeds. “The American Pit Bull Terrier is one of the top 5 most stable breeds in the country” (PBRC). Anyone can see that this is an excellent breed of dog. There are a few things that people should know though. “Pit bulls have a lower Tolerance to dogs, but with any breed, a dog’s tolerance changes as they mature” (PBRC). “Maturity can come late with pit bull breeds” (Villalobos Rescue Center). The reason for this low tolerance is because of their history of dog fighting. It has been bred into them to have the will to fight. Pit bulls usually do not start a fight most of the time, but they will not back down or give up. Due to this, owners must be cautious and attentive.

The Truth About Pit Bulls Essay
Owning a pit bull in today’s day and age has one of two reactions: Either the person loves them or is terrified of them. There are so many myths about Pit Bulls and they are just that. Myths. Some of the myths that surround pit bulls are that they have “lock jaw” and they have a killer instinct that does not stop at just killing other animals. Pit bull advocates, such as myself, know that Pit Bulls have always been known as the “nanny dog” throughout history because of how much they love children and their loyalty to their families. Mean or vicious dogs come from ignorant, irresponsible owners. The bottom line is that not all pit bulls are bad.
