The right tip for a pizza delivery person
If you've ever ordered a pizza, chances are that you have wondered what the appropriate tip is for the person who delivers your order. Tipping a pizza delivery person is not mandatory, but it is considered discourteous not to do so.
If your order comes to a maximum of $20, then a $3 tip is typical. If your order comes to more than $20, your tip should be a minimum of $5 or 10-20% of your order amount, whichever is higher. Whether you give 10% or as much as 20% will depend on the quality of the service you receive. However, if you do receive very poor service, you shouldn't tip.
If you have placed a small order, before handing over your $3, think about whether the trip is worth a bit more. Would you expect more had you made the journey? Also, thank the delivery person with a higher tip if their delivery of your food was timely and polite.
Essentially, delivery people are waiters on wheels, and you always tip your waiter. While the minimum tip is acceptable, think about the trip the delivery person has made, the distance and the conditions they travelled in. Perhaps a bigger tip would be a better reflection of the effort involved?
When to give delivery people a bigger tip
There are four key situations where you should give your pizza delivery person a bigger tip than customary. These are: when the delivery person has traveled through snow, rain or other inclement weather to reach you or whenever driving conditions are riskier than normal; when the journey between the restaurant and your home is greater than 5 miles; when the delivery person has to make their way to you during especially busy times, for example, during popular televised sports events (delivery people have to work a lot more quickly during peak periods to ensure your meal is still hot when it is delivered); and finally, when the service provided by your delivery person, for instance, their politeness and timeliness, really impresses you.Pizza Delivery Tip Calculator
