Planet Wisp[1] (プラネットウィスプ, Puranetto Wisupu?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a small planet in Sonic's universe, far from Earth,[2] and the home planet of the alien lifeforms known as the Wisps.[1] When Dr. Eggman sought the Wisps' power for universal domination, he dragged Planet Wisp to earth where he would slowly pick off the aliens and ravage their planet. Thanks to Sonic however, the planet was freed to be returned home.

Description[]

Planet Wisp is a lone spherical planet sitting somewhere in Sonic's universe. When seen from space, it heavily resembles the Earth, with its surface consisting of at least one continent and a few oceans.[3] In terms of proportions though, it is not very big, having been described as "tiny".[4] What it lacks in size though, it makes up for in untouched, unspoiled and unmatched natural beauty. Its surface, while having a distinct alien appeal to it,[5] is nonetheless covered in nature somewhat similar to that on Earth. The environment is dominated by bluish-gray, rocky terrains with valleys, plateaus, rock pillars, fields and canyons covered in a lush variety of flora. These floras include green grass, various kinds of flowers in different colors with alien petals, extremely tall trees with straight tree trunks, platform-shaped tree crowns, and roots standing above the ground, bushes, green ivy, and bioluminescent plants in various colors. The planet also has a number of bodies of water on it, with a few creeks running through the more open landscapes.

Planet Wisp's only known inhabitants are the Wisps, alien lifeforms made up of a really powerful form of energy called Hyper-go-on.[6] These creatures are very friendly, peaceful and halcyon.

Before Dr. Eggman's arrival, Planet Wisp featured an extremely minimal level of urbanized civilization (such as simple tree slides), its untouched nature being largely preserved by the Wisps' harmonious way of living in nature. However, following the doctor's brief takeover of Planet Wisp, many parts of the planet were artificially transformed for its integration into Egg Planet Park.[5] As such, many places on the planet have half-built red and metallic Eggman Empire-styled complexes, half pipe-like roads and tunnels, and towers. Several rivers, waterfalls and lakes on Planet Wisp have also been polluted with an unknown purple liquid.

Accordingly, Planet Wisp was created by Mother Wisp,[7] who would use it as the home for herself and the Wisp race that she gave life to.[7]

Sonic Colors[]

In the Wii version and Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, and the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate, Planet Wisp and its inhabitants were kidnapped by Dr. Eggman, who used a tractor beam generator he had planted on the planet to drag it and the Wisps on it to Egg Planet Park above the Earth, where it was chained to the Egg Mecha via its tractor beam.[8] Next, Eggman began turning Planet Wisp into a attraction befitting his interstellar theme park, not caring about the damage he did to Planet Wisp and its natural resources in the process.[5] In the meantime, Eggman would kidnap Wisps from Planet Wisp, whom he would drain of their Hyper-go-on energy for a Mind Control Ray that would let him take over the world.

Learning of the Wisps' plight, Sonic traveled to Planet Wisp with Tails where he managed to shut down the local tractor beam generator after defeating the robot guarding it. Not long after, Sonic and Tails completely broke the generator keeping Planet Wisp chained to the Egg Mecha. Later, after Eggman had been defeated and everything had been set right, the Wisps would use their collective powers to teleport Planet Wisp back to its original position in the universe.

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, a past version of Planet Wisp from the time where Egg Planet Park was still around got transported to White Space as a side-effect of the Time Eater's time-traveling, where it was drained of color and life.

Planet Wisp would be the ninth and final area Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic would travel to when trying to escape White Space. By speeding through Planet Wisp, the Sonics were able to fix space, thereby restoring Planet Wisp from its lifeless state. When the Time Eater later got destroyed, Planet Wisp was seemingly returned to its rightful place in the timeline.

Team Sonic Racing[]

In Team Sonic Racing, Planet Wisp appears as one of the main locations in the game. It has three racetracks, each of which explore different aspects of the planet.

After they met him, Dodon Pa took Team Sonic and Team Rose to Planet Wisp to have them race there as his Grand Prix's first contestants. Over time, these teams and a couple of others would come to Planet Wisp many times as a part of the Grand Prix and have several subsequent races there. Team Sonic and Team Dark in particular eventually participated in a race on Planet Wisp, but soon found trouble in the form of Dr. Eggman, who was invited to participate in the race as well. With Dodon Pa's help, Eggman constantly cheated in the race. However, with the combined efforts of Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose and Team Vector, Eggman was stopped and the race ended in a tie between Sonic and Shadow. Due to this, Sonic and Shadow had a rematch.[9]

In Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, the background and elements from Planet Wisp, such as Wisps and the flora from this planet, appear in the Sonic's Figure Skating Spectacular event. During this event, the participants start out in the Planet Wisp setting where they must collect their first Wisps from Wisp Capsules and progressively climb the metal tracks until they finally bounce off some Springs to the upper floor, which has been stylized as Starlight Carnival.

Sonic Runners[]

In Sonic Runners, Planet Wisp is mentioned by the Wisps who chose to stay on Earth after the Wisp incident.[10]

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle[]

In Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, Planet Wisp appears as one of the main areas in the game. It was added to promote the release of Sonic Colors: Ultimate.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Planet Wisp is a planet in the Prime Zone. Its history is virtually identical to its game counterpart. It was eventually visited by the Black Arms who took samples of its local Wisp species to cultivate the Dark Arms.

IDW Publishing[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, Planet Wisp is mentioned by Sonic while he was saving Wisps in Barricade Town.[11]
