Magical Girl Musings Planets in Astrology and Sailor Moon: The Moon

The Moon (☾) is the ruling planet of Cancer and is also exalted in Taurus.

The Moon is associated with the mother and with feminine energy in general. The Moon is both our inner child and our inner mother. It is associated maternal instincts/the urge to nurture, the home, the need for security and the past, especially early experiences and childhood. The Moon is considered the most maternal celestial object in astrology, governing over private home and family matters. In Chinese astrology in particular, the Moon represents Yin, the passive and receptive feminine life principle.

The Moon is responsive, receptive, and reflective. The Moon is our spontaneous and instinctual reactions. It is associated with a person’s intuition, emotional make-up, unconscious habits, rhythms, memories, moods and their ability to react and adapt to those around them. When we are “acting out” our Moon, we are imaginative, creative, intuitive, sentimental, adaptable, introspective, and protective. On the negative side, we can be moody, restless, and irrational.

Within Sailor Moon, Usagi Tsukino is a Cancer (which I wrote an analysis on) and so her astrological ruling planet is the Moon. Of course, she’s also Sailor Moon, and so directly represents and embodies the Moon that way. After reading the Moon’s significance and attributes in astrology, it’s clear it has a lot of connection to Usagi.

First is the Moon’s association with femininity and maternity. Usagi is, of course, very girly and feminine. She wholeheartedly embraces her feminine side, both as Usagi and Sailor Moon; as Usagi, she wears girly, often frilly clothes and loves romantic things, and as Sailor Moon her attacks often incorporate hearts, pink, sparkles, rainbows, etc. She is unapologetically feminine. As for being maternal, Usagi is the only Senshi (discounting Sailor Heavy Metal Papillon from the manga) who is known to be a mother, giving birth to Chibiusa at some point in the series’s future. After Chibiusa travels from the future to the 20th century and becomes a stable fixture in Usagi’s life, Usagi quickly develops her maternal instincts and shows them off whenever Chibiusa is in danger. Aside from her maternal instincts towards her own daughter, Usagi becomes a surrogate mother of sorts to Chibi Chibi in the Stars arc. Through her relationship with Chibi Chibi, we see Usagi’s more nurturing, maternal, mature side.

Moving on, the Moon’s association with the past and memories is very fitting for Usagi and the importance her past life as Princess Serenity plays in the series. Usagi regaining the memories of her past life is a major part of the first arc in Sailor Moon, and the Senshi’s past in the Silver Millennium remains an important plot/character point in the other story arcs.

Finally, the Moon’s connection to the emotional, subconscious, and intuitive aspects of our psyche is very fitting for Usagi. Usagi is a very emotional and reactive person. While not stupid, she tends to rely on her instincts and emotional reactions over logic. A good example of this can be seen in episode 125, where Usagi willingly hands over the Holy Grail to Mistress 9. She did this because Mistress 9 was in Hotaru Tomoe’s body and pretended that she was dying and needed the Holy Grail to survive. Usagi handed over the Holy Grail even with Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune yelling at her for how stupid she was being, and honestly, it’s hard to argue with them. Was it logical or wise to hand over the Holy Grail to the enemy who needed it to complete their evil plan? Of course not. But to Usagi, all she saw was the chance to save Hotaru’s body so her spirit could hopefully come back to it. Sweet, shy Hotaru, who is Chibiusa’s best friend and the person Usagi has been trying to protect this whole time. This is just one of many examples of Usagi relying on her emotions to guide her decision-making, for better or worse (although thanks to how powerful she is, it usually ends up being for the better).

With all this in mind, it’s easy to see that the Moon is a very fitting astrological symbol for Usagi!
