To sign please, take your dominant hand with fingers extended and held together, and thumb extended and sticking out. Take the hand with palm facing in and rub it in a circle on your chest.

SIGN USAGE

To teach the please concept to an intermediate signer when your baby makes a request (e.g. milk), acknowledge the request and ask them to say please (while doing the sign). "I'll get you milk. Can you say please?" Even if your baby does not understand at first, they will learn to copy. Then reward them by fulfilling their request. Please is great, even once children are older and are no longer actively signing. Use it as a secret code to gently remind your children to say please when your are with company, without causing them any embarrassment.

Conceptual baby signs like please are not well-suited for teaching using the flash cards, as such are more for the teachers and parents teaching kids how to sign them. Please is easier taught in real-life situations, having your baby practice the sign when they want something, before you give it to them.

Hi came across this and going to learn with my 5mth old grandson, can you add a sign for tummy pain or some other kind of pain a small person isnt able to communicate with… found hurt but could do with a few more like sore head or earache. Hope you dont mind me asking… great site and cant wait to see how my grandson takes to it, he’s a cleft baby so hopefully sign will come in handy for us. x

My 2yr old son has a rare condition that causes problems with growth, craniofacial abnormalities and he has had surgery to help correct some things. He was on a feeding tube for some time due to his Jaw being so small and a cleft that still has not been repaired plus the surgery causing it to be hard to feed from breast and bottle. He still can not speak. He is not deaf but there is a high possibility in his future of becoming deaf. He is learning faster than I thought he would and is loving the ability to tell me what he needs and wants. I have not used ASL sense I was in grade school. Is there an easier way to teach my son, my 3 other girls and myself in a more productive way than random search online or expensive classes. This site has been so much help. Started teaching my 2yr old to sign cause she can not speak we have enjoyed doing it getting the books off amazon super proud of her

I am doing this with my son. He is 19 months old now but we started at about 8 months old. He knows probably 10 different signs right now and I love it. I feel like he has an easier time expressing no what he needs or wants.

i’ve got a 3 year old grandson he’s been shaken when he was three months old he can say a few words but needs special help i want to learn how to learn so he can talk to me

We encourage you to start with simple but relevant signs like mom, dad, up and more. Once your grandson learns those you can try other concepts and signs.

My son is 17 months old and doesn’t speak yet. I want to try to teach him signing as an alternative until he starts speaking. Is it too early and should he be talking by now?

ADMIN – Hi Catherine,

We encourage you to teach your baby a few signs to help him communicate basic needs. Additionally, consult with your pediatrician or speech therapist for his verbal progress. Every baby is different but often by 17 months they are already verbalizing some sound and a few words.

I always want to talk sign language. But i never been talking sign language.

what if the child is a beginner? I am trying to teach the boy i babysit for please and thank you and I do it, while saying the word. Then I use his hand and do it on him while saying the word. He just looks at me w/ a big grin. Has no desire to try it or even care what I’m doing. It’s like he’s disconnected. It’s like he has no idea what I’m doing. As a matter of fact, he never repeats anything I do or say. he’s 2 yrs 4 months. Shouldn’t he be repeating things by now?

ADMIN: Hi, It is all about contextual repetition. At age two is the baby already verbal? If so he is probably realizing that he has no need for the sign because he can communicate his needs using speech.
