What is a POD file?

POD files mostly belong to OpenProj by Serena Software. A POD file is a file written in the lightweight markup language POD (Plain Old Documentation). POD is used to document the Perl programming language. It's designed to be a simple, clean language with just enough syntax to be useful. It purposefully doesn't include mechanisms for fonts, images, colors, or tables to achieve the aforementioned design goals.

  • Use: Pod is the language used for most documentation in the Perl world. This includes nearly all publicly released modules, many scripts, most design documents, many articles, and the Parrot virtual machine. Even though pod is readable without the assistance of a formatting tool, it is usually read with the perldoc tool.
  • Structure: POD files are written in an ASCII-compatible encoding. They begin with and contain pod directives, which are denoted with an equal sign. They are divided into paragraphs using empty lines. Paragraphs that begin with whitespace are considered "verbatim" and are left unformatted. Those which begin with an equal sign are considered "command", as they start with a pod directive, and the rest of the paragraph is formatted according to that directive. All paragraphs are parsed for formatting codes.
  • Compatibility: POD (and therefore POD files) is easily converted to other formats such as XML, TeX or Markdown.

How to open a POD file

You need a suitable software like OpenProj to open a POD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your POD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a POD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

POD format details:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the POD files:

POD is a very common file type and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The two most common formats are as follows:

  • 85% of all POD files are associated with ProjectLibre project management files, which internally utilize the well-known Java format. This format is used to save Java objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a Java object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The average file size is 280 KB with most files being between 90 KB and 860 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords 1.0.0sr, accessControlPolicyJ, allowedIdleTimeJ, availableImagesJ, calendarIdI, expenseTypeJ, idleTimeZ, incrementalDistributionsJ, )com.projectlibre1.server.data.ProjectData and locked are typical for these files. These files are attributed to project, plan, gantt, schedule, chart, timeline, group, management and system.
  • 5% of all POD files are associated with Bloodrayne game data archive. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are 2 MB to 250 MB in size, with a median of 120 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Release format assets. A usual file name is COMMON.POD or LANGUAGE.POD. Such POD files store data about sound and model.

All other POD files (10%) have no uniform format, often e.g. Plain Old Documentation format, ZIP and POD. They are often associated with assignment, cronograma, planning, work, implementation, proyecto, template or libre. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your POD file!

How to solve problems with POD files

  • Associate the POD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open project files. Because only the current version supports the latest POD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Serena Software manufacturer website after an available OpenProj update.
  • To make sure that your POD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
