Pokemon Go Great League start & end date

The Great League is the ideal place to start in Pokemon Go‘s competitive mode, since it’s the most basic and accessible tier of them all. So, check out which Pokemon are perfect to build a winning team!

Each new Pokemon Go season shakes up the meta in the Go Battle League, forcing players to rebuild their teams and devise new strategies to climb the ranks for a spot at the top.

However, unlike the Ultra and Master Leagues, this one gives all trainers a fairer chance at glory, as only Pokemon under 1500 CP can compete. This means that while powerful creatures can participate, you won’t have Legendaries one-shotting you.

Best team for Pokemon Go Great League

Currently, the best team that trainers can use in the Great League includes Bastiodon, Jellicent, and Stunfisk, as these are three of the strongest fighters, and they all offer good coverage against most of the major Great League opponents.

Even when compared to Legendaries and other powerful Pokemon, Bastiodon still has one of the best Defense stats in Pokemon Go. Its Attack stat pales in comparison, but that doesn’t stop it from excelling in the Great League.

Smack Down as a Fast Move hits hard, while Stone Edge is a powerful Rock-type Charged Move that takes advantage of STAB, and Flamethrower can be used against the many Steel-types being exploited this season.

Jellicent offers trainers incredible bulk, along with a vast list of resistances that will keep it alive during an encounter.

Both Fast Moves are great options, but Hex has slightly faster energy generation, as well as Ghost-type coverage. To balance this, opt for Surf as your Charged Move. It is cheap, powerful, and benefits from STAB. For your secondary option, use Shadow Ball – an unstopable nuke.

Stunfisk is a very bulky Pokemon, with decent Defense and high Stamina stats. Additionally, its unique type combination enables it to stand strong against league favorites, such as Steel and Flying opponents.

Thunder Shock is a move with fast charge, meaning you’ll have access to your Charged Moves sooner. With Mud Bomb, you can bait the enemy shields so you’re free to hit them full-on with Discharge afterward.

Alternatives

If you don’t have access to either of those three Pokemon you can switch them:

  • Bastiodon: switch it for Carbink or Steelix.
  • Jellicent: switch it for Shadow Dusclops or Gourgeist.
  • Stunfisk: switch it for Morpeko or Gastrodon.

In case you come across an opponent that targets your team’s weaknesses, we have a long list of other powerful creatures that can help you dominate the Great League.

Best Pokemon for Pokemon Go Great League

Lapras

pokemon go laprasDEXERTO
  • Fast Move: Psywave
  • Charged Moves: Sparkling Aria and Ice Beam
  • Type: Water/Ice
  • Resistances: Ice and Water
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, Grass, and Rock

Besides its great bulk, Lapras has an impressive move pool, with four Fast Moves and seven Charged Moves to pick from.

Even though focusing only on Water and Ice moves to benefit from STAB would be the logical thing to do, for the Fast Move, it is best to go with Psywave. It offers the most energy generation out of all the options, and it expands Lapras’s coverage.

Skull Bash, Blizzard, and Hydro Pump are quite expensive moves, and with a few other options available, they are just not worth it. Instead, use Sparkling Aria for a solid Charged Move with STAB. It costs the same as Surf but does five more damage.

As for the secondary Charged Move, Ice Beam will offer more coverage against Grass, Dragon, and Flying opponents while also benefiting from STAB.

Sealeo (Shadow)

sealeo with a pokemon go backgroundDEXERTO
  • Fast Move: Powder Snow
  • Charged Moves: Surf and Body Slam
  • Type: Ice/Water
  • Resistances: Ice and Water
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, Grass, and Rock

Sealeo is a solid choice in the tournament because of its bulk and spammy moves that let it outlast opponents and apply constant pressure in limited metas.

Article continues after ad

For the Fast Move, players can use Powder Snow to build energy quickly while applying steady pressure (with STAB). Fire off the Charged Move Body Slam whenever possible to force your opponent’s shields or secure momentum, and rely on Surf for stronger, more threatening coverage when you need to push through bulkier targets.

Lickilicky

NIANTIC
  • Fast Move: Rollout
  • Charged Moves: Body Slam and Shadow Ball
  • Type: Normal
  • Resistances: Ghost
  • Weaknesses: Fighting

The bulky Lickilicky is a very solid choice for the League, as it only has one weakness, and its move pool allows it to hit a wide range of types with Normal, Shadow, and Rock attacks.

Rollout is a move that offers fast charge, allowing Lickilicky to access Charged Moves more quickly. Body Slam can be used as shield bait, while Shadow Ball works as a coverage nuke to target league favorites Galarian Corsola and Altaria.

Empoleon

pokemon go empoleonTHE POKEMON COMPANY
  • Fast Move: Metal Sound
  • Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon and Drill Peck
  • Type: Water/Steel
  • Resistances: Steel, Poison, Ice, Water, Rock, Psychic, Normal, Flying, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Fighting, and Ground

This dual Water/Steel-type Pokemon has climbed the ranks in the League and sits at the top thanks to its powerful Attack and formidable Defenses. It serves as a great counter to Pokemon like Wigglytuff, Cradily, and Altaria.

Article continues after ad

Metal Sound is a good, fast charge move, which makes it very spammy. As for the Charged Move, Hydro Cannon is the way to go due to its high damage and very low cost. Plus, it’s one of the best Water-type moves in the whole game. If you can afford a secondary Charged Move, Drill Peck can help you expand your coverage.

Galarian Corsola (XL)

pokemon go galarian corsolaNIANTIC/DEXERTO
  • Fast Move: Astonish
  • Charged Moves: Night Shade and Power Gem
  • Type: Ghost
  • Resistances: Normal, Fighting, Poison, and Bug
  • Weaknesses: Dark and Ghost

Since its debut, Galarian Corsola has climbed the PvP ranks on the Battle League thanks to its bulkiness and strong moveset, which benefits from STAB.

Tackle is a really bad option, so pick Astonish for your Fast Move, as it is the only Ghost-type attack and has great synergy with Night Shade.

Night Shade is a very cheap Charged Move with decent damage per energy, so go with it. Complement it with Power Gem, as it will expand your coverage, thanks to its affordability.

Goodra

pokemon go goodraNiantic / The Pokemon Company
  • Fast Move: Dragon Breath
  • Charged Moves: Aqua Tail and Thunder Punch
  • Type: Dragon
  • Resistances: Electric, Fire, Grass, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, and Ice

This slimy Dragon from Gen 6 has an outstanding bulk, which is a big factor in its success in the Battle League, alongside its spammy moves. Plus, it has great type coverage in its movepool.

Article continues after ad

With five different types across both Fast and Charged Moves, it can counter many different Pokemon, making it useful for almost all scenarios.

Out of both Fast Moves, Dragon Breath is the stronger choice as it benefits from STAB. For the Charged Move, Aqua Tail can expand your coverage while baiting the enemy shields and dealing decent damage. Use Thunder Punch to target Water-type opponents.

Wigglytuff

Wigglytuff in Pokemon GoNiantic / The Pokemon Company
  • Fast Move: Charm
  • Charged Move: Icy Wind and Swift
  • Type: Normal/Fairy
  • Resistances: Bug, Dark, Dragon, and Ghost
  • Weaknesses: Poison and Steel

The iconic charmer Wigglytuff has slowly fallen out of favor in the Great League over the years, but it returns to the top of the charts thanks to its solid bulk and the ability to resist (and defeat) some feared champions.

Article continues after ad

As always, you’ll want the deadly Charm as Wigglytuff’s Fast Move. While it doesn’t have great energy generation, it deals heavy damage. Once you get to your Charged Moves, use Swift to bait shields and Icy Wind to expand coverage and decrease the target’s Attack stat by 20%.

Corviknight

pokemon go corviknightNIANTIC/DEXERTO
  • Fast Move: Sand Attack
  • Charged Moves: Air Cutter and Payback
  • Type: Flying/Steel
  • Resistances: Bug, Grass, Poison, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Psychic, Steel, and Ground
  • Weaknesses: Electric and Fire

Like most Steel-type Pokemon, one of Corviknight’s advantages is the many resistances it has. That, along with its very good Defense and Stamina stats, makes this a very difficult creature to take down.

Article continues after ad

Even though it’s the only Fast Move that doesn’t benefit from STAB, Sand Attack offers great coverage and has a very fast energy gain.

Article continues after ad

As for the Charged Moves, Air Cutter is quite spammy, so it can help you take down the opponent’s shields. Plus, it benefits from STAB and has a 30% chance of boosting your Attack stat by 25%. Payback, on the other hand, is a coverage nuke all trainers using Corviknight should have as a secondary choice.

Azumarill (XL)

Azumarill in the Catch CupNiantic / The Pokemon Company
  • Fast Move: Bubble
  • Charged Moves: Play Rough and Ice Beam
  • Type: Water/Fairy
  • Resistances: Bug, Fighting, Water, Ice, Fire, Dark, and Dragon
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Grass, and Poison

Azumarill is, without a doubt, one of the best Fairy-type Pokemon ever. This is mainly due to its solid moveset, great coverage, and massive bulk that allows it to outlast most other opponents.

Bubble is the best Fast Move to use, with a good balance between damage and energy generation. Play Rough is the Charged Move you need, as it’s cheap and powerful. Plus, it benefits from STAB and will target Dark and Poison-type opponents. For some extra coverage, use Ice Beam.

Altaria

Altaria in the Hoenn CupNiantic / The Pokemon Company
  • Fast Move: Dragon Breath
  • Charged Moves: Sky Attack and Flamethrower
  • Type: Dragon/Flying
  • Resistances: Fighting, Water, Bug, Fire, Grass, and Ground
  • Weaknesses: Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Rock

Altaria is one of the most time-consuming evolutions in Pokemon Go, as it costs a whopping 400 Candy, and its pre-evolution, Swablu, isn’t exactly a common spawn. But if you’re lucky enough to have one, you should definitely consider giving it a spot on your team.

Article continues after ad

When it comes to Altaria’s moveset, you’ll want Dragon Breath as a Fast Move for its big damage potential, followed up with Sky Attack as a low-cost shield-baiting Charged Move. Add Flamethrower as your secondary Charged Move to deal serious damage and expand your coverage.

Furret

pokemon go furretDEXERTO
  • Fast Move: Sucker Punch
  • Charged Moves: Swift and Trailblaze
  • Type: Normal
  • Resistances: Ghost
  • Weaknesses: Fighting

The tiny Furret from Gen 2 might not seem like a threat to any Battle League opponent. However, its very high Stamina stat and single weakness can help it survive a very long time, serving as a good switcher.

Thanks to the addition of Swift and Trailblaze, Furret can now be a useful teammate. First, use Sucker Punch as your Fast Move to benefit from its very serious damage and reduce the enemy’s HP.

Then, set Swift as your main Charged Move, as it is incredibly spammy and cheap. Use Trailblaze as your secondary Charged Move to boost your Attack stat by 25%, expand your coverage, and sweep every opponent.

Gastrodon

Gastrodon appearing in Pokemon GoNIANTIC
  • Fast Move: Mud-Slap
  • Charged Moves: Body Slam and Water Pulse
  • Type: Ground/Water
  • Resistances: Steel, Rock, Poison, Fire, and Electric
  • Weaknesses: Grass

Gastrodon didn’t use to be good at the Go Battle League, but thanks to the Mud-Slap buff and its very high Stamina, things changed for the dual Water/Ground-type creature. Plus, having only one weakness makes the water slug an even better choice.

Out of both Fast Moves, Mud-Slap is stronger, cheaper, and benefits from STAB. Body Slam is Gastrodon’s cheapest Charged Move, and due to how fast it is, it can be used to force the enemy shields while Water Pulse expands the coverage.
