Pokemon GO's latest update finally gives trainers the chance to catch the mythical Pokemon Mew, but doing so is no easy task. In fact, players are expected to complete a number of time-consuming challenges to find Mew, such as evolving a Magikarp into a Gyarados.

In Pokemon GO, evolving a Magikarp into a Gyarados can take quite a bit of time, as it requires 400 Magikarp candy. While this is likely going to be one of the toughest challenges for anyone hoping to add Mew to their Pokedex, there are steps players can take to speed up the process.

The first thing players should do is make Magikarp their buddy Pokemon. Magikarp only needs to be walked 1km to earn a candy with it, meaning that players can rack up a decent amount of Magikarp candy just by walking around. Better yet, there are a couple of other objectives in the Mew quest that require players to earn candy with their buddy Pokemon, and Magikarp's low walking distance requirement makes it the perfect buddy for that as well.

The second thing players should do is try to play near a public lake or other body of water. Since Magikarp is a water-type Pokemon, it is far more likely to spawn near water, and players can potentially earn three Magikarp candy for each one they catch. Players can double that number to six candy from Magikarp catches by feeding them a Pinap Berry first, though, so keep that in mind.

Other ways players can earn Magikarp candy include hatching them out of eggs (focus on 2km eggs) and by feeding them rare candy, commonly earned as raid battle rewards. If possible, players should try to do higher level raids as they will yield better rewards, including more rare candy than the lower tier raids. Magikarp, by the way, can also be fought in raids, which will be helpful in the long process to evolve it into a Gyarados.

The final tip we have for collecting 400 Magikarp candy as fast as possible is by farming the Field Research quest to Catch X Number of Pokemon. If players find a PokeStop that is giving out this quest, they can spin it once a day for repeated opportunities to catch Magikarp. Sometimes players will be rewarded with items instead of a Magikarp encounter, but it's still something to consider.
