Pokémon Go level cap and how levelling works: Levelling changes explained
The Pokémon Go level cap is Level 80, increasing 30 levels from the previous level cap of 50 after the initial level cap was raised in November 2020. This is quite a significant change and alongside it came a rebalance to the game's levelling system overall. These changes were designed to ensure players can level up more frequently compared to the sometimes year long grind previously.
The effect of these changes, however, means that players who were playing Pokémon Go before 15th October 2025 have had their XP rebalanced. If you're one of said players, then there's some important information you need to know:
- Nobody's level will decrease. The amount of XP required for your next level may change though.
- Players who are Level 23 or higher will gain at least one level.
- The Level-Up Research tasks for Level 41 to 50 have been removed.
- This includes the removal of the associated avatar item rewards for these tasks, including the Level 50 Jacket.
- You will keep these avatar items if you've already unlocked them.
- Everyone will receive a medal commemorating their highest achieved level prior to the update.
- A new avatar pose will be available for players who were Level 50 prior to 15th October 2025.
- New Level-Up Research tasks have been introduced for Level 71 to 80.
- New avatar item rewards connected to levelling have been introduced from Level 25 onwards.
- Players will retroactively receive the new avatar clothing and storage-related rewards from previous levels depending on their level increase.
- If your level increases from 50 to 60, for example, you'll receive all of the rewards between those levels alongside the avatar and storage rewards before Level 50.
- Players who are Level 15 or above will gain access to the Daily Adventure Egg.
- Players who are Level 70 or above have an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends with players you're Best Friends with.
- The level cap increase only affects a player's Trainer Level and not their Pokémon.
When it comes to exactly how you level up, it is as follows:
From Level 1 to 70, the levelling simply requires collecting XP. When you reach a certain threshold, you'll increase to the next level. Though it may still take you a long time depending on the exact level…
From Level 71 to 80, you will need to both collect a required amount of XP and complete a series of Level-Up Research Tasks which we've outlined below. Once these two requirements are met, you'll automatically advance to the next level.
The Level-Up Research Tasks are outlined in this guide if you want to take a look. For now, I'll mention that they can range from collecting a certain number of medal types, purifying an awful lot of Shadow Pokémon, competing in raids and more.
Remember - the levelling changes have not affected Pokémon levels, meaning the CP cap for Pokémon has not been raised. Instead, it works exactly the same as previously - increasing in line with your level between Level 1 to 40, then requiring XL Candy if you want a Pokémon to go beyond Level 40.
