Pokemon TCGPokemon TCG BREAKthrough Set Features New Landscape Cards

XY8 is coming!

Joshua Yehl AvatarBy Joshua YehlUpdated: Jun 27, 2019 9:40pm UTC99 commentsA new set of cards for the English Pokemon Trading Card Game has been revealed called XY—BREAKthrough. The set introduces new “BREAK” cards that are landscape design and have a unique foil pattern. They are placed sideways over the top of an existing Pokemon to give them an HP boost and new attacks while still keeping their existing ones. The announcement on Pokemon’s website showed off BREAK cards for both Raichu and Chesnaught and a press release also mentions Zoroark will be one, too.
Wondering why they’re gold plated? The announcement says that the Pokemon BREAK come from two worlds -- “one world of technology, one world of nature” -- so that will play into each Pokemon BREAK’s new look. The Pokemon TCG has had landscape cards before in the Heart Gold/Soul Silver days, but these BREAK cards are an entirely new concept as far as gameplay goes. The set will include over 160 cards, with 6 new Pokémon BREAK, and 8 new Pokemon-EX, including 4 Mega Evolution Pokemon. There will also be 20 trainer cards, including 2 full-art rare Ultra trainer cards, which has become the usual. There will also be two new 60-card theme decks -- Burning Spark and Night Striker -- which thanks to reveals from French products we know feature BREAK versions of Raichu and Noivern, respectively.
With 4 Pokémon BREAK revealed, that leaves 2 more to go. And we also know 3 of the 4 Megas thanks to Mega Mewtwo-X, Mega Mewtwo-Y, and Mega Houndoom being featured on the booster packs. The Japanese Pokemon Twitter account also showed off a new Mewtwo-EX.The Pokemon: XY—BREAKthrough expansion will release on November 4 and the cards will also be playable on the Pokemon Trading Card Game Online. While you're waiting for the new set, check out our list of the 10 Best Pokemon: Ancient Origins Cards.
