New ChecklistAll ListsMy ChecklistsAllAll ListsMy ChecklistsIn In Pokemon Gold/Silver, each Pokemon falls into either one or two of 17 different Pokemon types -- each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Next to the individual Pokemon abilities (such as HP, Strength, Defense, etc), these types determine what each creature's strengths, abilities and weaknesses are. When putting together a team, remember that creating a well-balanced team is the most important skill a Pokemon trainer can have.
There are two new types in Pokemon Gold and Silver, which add an interesting new twist to the "paper rock scissors" comparisons you learned in the previous games.
Steel attacks are strong against Ice and Rock, but weak against Fire, Water, Electric and Steel. However, Steel is a great defensive type; nearly all attack types are weak against it except Water and Electric, which are normal, and it is completely immune to Poison. Steel’s only weaknesses are against Fire, Fighting and Ground attacks.
Dark attacks are strong against Psychic and Ghost, but weak against Fighting, Dark and Steel. Unlike the other new type, Dark is a fairly typical type defensively. It is string against Ghost and Dark attacks, and immune to Psychic attacks. Dark-type Pokemon should avoid Fighting and Bug attacks, however..
The following chart tells you what attacks are effective against what opponent types.
Note that a Pokémon that uses an attack that is of its same type (ie: Mewtwo, a Psychic Pokémon, using the Psychic technique) deals 50% more damage than a Pokémon that uses a non-matching attack (ie: Mewtwo, a Psychic Pokémon, using the Thunder technique).
The damage any given attack causes is further determined by each individual Pokémon's Level as well as Attack and Special stats.
