Photo: Anthony Surace Ecuador is known for its rich biodiversity; the country is among the most megadiverse countries in the world. [WP] Geography of Ecuador Ecuador is a geographically diverse country with three distinct continental and one insular region. On the mainland, the center is dominated by La Sierra (mountain range), the mountainous region of the Andean highlands that runs from north to south and divides the country. Within the Ecuadorian Andes are the country's highest mountains, the capital Quito and some major cities like Ambato, Cuenca, Ibarra and Loja. - To the west of the Andes is the coastal lowland known as La Costa (coast), where the country borders the South Pacific Ocean. Guayaquil, Ecuador's main port and largest city, is located there.
- To the east of the Andes is El Oriente (The East), the sparsely populated rainforest region of the Ecuadorian part of the Amazon basin. The main urban centers in El Oriente are Puerto Francisco de Orellana (aka El Coca), a river port at the confluence of the Coca River and the Napo River and Nueva Loja, an oil mining town founded in the 1960s as a base camp of the U.S. energy corporation Texaco (now Chevron).
- The volcanic Galapagos Islands on the equator, about 1000 km west of the South American coast, are an Ecuadorian province with the capital Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristóbal Island. The archipelago is world famous for its unique plants and animals found nowhere else in the world. Charles Darwin and his famous book "On The Origin Of Species" will forever be associated with the Galapagos Islands. The Galápagos Islands

Photo: Anthony Surace - Mountains of Ecuador The country's center is dominated by the Ecuadorian Andes, which are part of the giant mountain range that stretches from north to south along the west coast of the South American continent. In the west is the Cordillera Occidental range, and in the east, the Cordillera Real. According to PeakVisor [PV], there are 1,289 named mountains in Ecuador. The highest mountain is Chimborazo, an inactive stratovolcano at 6,268 m (20,564 ft); its last eruption is estimated around 640 AD. Cotopaxi, Ecuador's second-highest mountain at 5,897 m (19,347 ft), is an active stratovolcano (last eruption in 2023). Cayambe, a dormant volcano (last erupted in March 1786), has an elevation of 5,790 m (18,996 ft). Antisana is a 5,753 m (18,875 ft) tall dormant volcano (last eruption 1801 to 1802). [Smithsonian]
- Rivers of Ecuador Ecuador is a country of hundreds of rivers and streams, many of which rise in the Andes mountains and flow either west to the Pacific Ocean or east and empty into the Amazon. Some of the main rivers that flow through Ecuador's Amazon basin are the Río San Miguel, which forms a section of the Colombian-Ecuadorian border and feeds the Putumayo River, which forms another section; the Coca River, a tributary of the Napo River, and the Río Pastaza, a tributary of the Marañón River. In the Costa region, there are mainly intermittent rivers fed by constant rainfall from December to May, which become empty riverbeds during the dry season. [CS] Some major rivers in the Costa region are the Río Esmeraldas, the Babahoyo, and the Guayas Rivers. The Río Daule and the Río Peripa form the Daule-Peripa Reservoir.
- National Parks El Cajas National Park is located in the highlands near the city of Cuenca in the southern Andes. The park is known for its many glacial lakes and alpine tundra vegetation (páramo). The Yasuní National Park is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon Rainforest in the El Oriente region. The park covers an area of 9,824 km² (3,793 sq mi) and is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, home to indigenous peoples and a vast variety of flora and fauna. The Podocarpus National Park is located in the southern provinces of Loja and Zamora-Chinchipe. The park is a hotspot for biodiversity, with both Andean and Amazonian species.

Tropical Mountain Rainforest Climate in southern Ecuador. Photo: yago1 Amazon Rainforest The tropical, highly biodiverse Amazon rainforest in the lowland areas of the Oriente region of Ecuador is part of the much larger Amazon basin, which stretches across multiple countries in South America. The region is sparsely populated. Timber and oil are the most important economic resources, but deforestation and oil extraction are a threat to the environment and the region's population. Within Ecuador's Amazon Basin is the Yasuni National Park, the country's largest national park. A referendum on oil exploration in the national park in August 2023 passed, stopping oil drilling in the national park. - Tumbes–Chocó–Magdalena In the coastal lowlands of Ecuador's La Costa region is a section of the 1,800 km (1,112 mi) long Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena, a biodiversity hotspot, [CI] which includes tropical moist forests and tropical dry forests. The region ranges from the extreme east of Panama to the lower Magdalena Valley in Colombia and along the Pacific coast of Colombia and Ecuador to the northwest corner of Peru. In Ecuador, 98% of native coastal forest has been cut down, making it the most threatened tropical forest in the world. [CI]
