Princess Blanding

Princess Blanding is an African-American criminal justice reform activist and politician who ran for Governor of Virginia in 2021 as the Liberation Party of Virginia candidate.

Biography

Princess Blanding was born in Virginia, the sister of Marcus-David Peters, and she served as an administrator at Essex High School, where her brother taught high school biology. On 14 May 2018, her brother got into a car accident in Richmond while suffering from a mental health crisis, and he proceeded to stop his car on the on-ramp to Interstate 95, get out of his car while naked, be struck by a car, and then advance on a responding police officer, Michael Nyantakyi, who tasered Peters several times before fatally shooting him after an unharmed Peters continued to walk towards him. Nyantakyi was cleared of wrongdoing, and his actions were again found reasonable in a November 2020 re-examination. In response, Blanding became a criminal justice reform activist, working with legislators to pass the MARCUS alert system in 2020 to help respond to mental health crises, but she came to criticize the bill for being "watered down" and "ineffective", criticizing the system as "racist, corrupt, and broken" at Governor Ralph Northam's signing ceremony. In December 2020, she decided to run for Governor of Virginia in 2020 as the Liberation Party of Virginia candidate, running on a democratic socialist and progressive platform and accusing the Democratic Party of offering "crumbs" to African-Americans.
