“	Wild Pteranodon Wyvernus is a large Pterosaur, capable of flying for incredible long periods. While others I've seen on the island still call it a Pteradactyl, this is inaccurate. The Ptreanodon seems to be one of the least aberrant dinosaurs on the island. Pteranodon Wyvernus mostly feeds itself by eating the small fish around the island, but they can also be found scavenging any number of dead animals. Because of this, they are one of the most common dinosaurs on the island. Domesticated I don't know how they did it, but I once saw a trio of Pteranodons with riders on them. This is among the fastest ways to get around the island, but it can't provide any measure of safety or secrecy.	”

The Pteranodon is a medium sized carnivorous pterosaur found on the Ark. The Pteranodon lands occasionally to scavenge for food. In addition to incorrectly being called a Pterodactyl, the Pteranodon is not actually a dinosaur.

Appearance[]

The Pteranodon is a common sight on both the beaches and the interior regions of the ARK. It has a long crest and beak (filled with needle-like teeth, oddly enough), as well as impressive wings, which strangely bear more resemblance those of a bat than those of other pterosaurs species in the ARK.

Behavior[]

Upon being attacked, the Pteranodon will attempt to fly away and avoid combat. Being a carnivore, the Pteranodon requires meat for food and taming. A ranged weapon is recommended to fight or tame a Pteranodon.

Pteranodons are unable to regenerate stamina without landing, so it is possible to follow one until it lands in an attempt to tame it.

Taming[]

The Pteradon is just a simple knockout tame, a very easy one at that. if you want to tame one just Bola it, than use almost any knockout tool and your good! (there head has a 3x dmg. multiplier so aim for it) they are carnivores so they eat meat and prefer raw prime.

Breeding[]

Breeding is the same as most other creatures, just enable mating and your all good.

Flight Control[]

Indispensable as a quick flying sprinter. Like the Argentavis it is able to pick various creatures off the ground and either drop them from the air or place them in a pen. In contrast the Pteranodon is unable to attack the creature it carries. This can be used to separate pack animals or to relocate tamed creatures.

By default this maneuver can be executed using the alt-fire or right mouse-click.

Pteranodons are also able to preform acrobatic maneuvers such as a barrel roll.(If using WASD barrel roll is C)

Trivia[]

• Tamed Pteranodons do not fly when you set them to Wander, allowing you to breed them safely without a roof. No longer true as of latest version
• Having a Pteranodon follow you or a mount at high speeds may be annoying and impractical, as the Pteranodon will easily overtake any other creature. This often causes them to do a circle around you, and get stuck in the walking creature's legs, rendering both creatures immobile.
• Putting too many points into Speed can make the Pteranodon fly too fast compared to its turning speed. This will cause the Pteranodon to endlessly circle around the player at high speed, which makes it difficult or even impossible to mount it. If that happens, tell it to stop following and wait for it to sit down to mount again.
• It is recommended to have a close look at your Pteranodon's Stamina when flying on its back, as it will force-land if it runs out of Stamina.
• They can also be used to pick up other survivors, regardless of affiliation -except in PvE, where only Allies may be picked up- from the ground or out of their saddles However, keep in mind that the Pteranodon will stop advancing if the combined weight of all inventories exceeds the Pteranodon's Weight stat. The carrying action is done by using the alt-fire key, and this can be used to help to transport allies to various locations, or to kill your enemies by dropping them from a high altitude. If your Pteranodon runs out of Stamina and force-lands while dragging someone, they will be released.
• Compared with the Argentavis they fly quicker, but run out of Stamina much faster.
• Shooting while being carried can hit (and most likely kill) the Pteranodon.
• Tamed Pteranodons can die because of drowning on low stamina if set on following players to water areas, even in shallow ponds.
• When force-landing due to stamina, tamed Pteranodons can sometimes stall in mid-air and drop their rider after about a minute, often leading to the rider's death.
• A Pteranodon can fit through a regular door frame whilst being flown.
• While flying on a Pterandon in multiplayer mode, beware of auto turret wielding bases, as they can easily shoot down your Pterandon very quickly.
• Pteranodons are great fighters due to their aileron roll and relatively fast melee attack. It can be used to chase fast prey over long distances. However, their low health and stamina make them easy targets for land and air creatures.
• Pteranodon's speed lets them easily outrun an Argentavis or Quetzalcoatlus over short distances.
• You can force feed a tamed Pteranodon stimberries while riding them.

Trivia not relevant for the game[]

• Despite being classed as a carnivore in-game, it is far more likely that the real Pteranodon was piscvorous
• Despite the fact Pteranodon means "Toothless Wing", the ones in the game are portrayed with small sharp teeth.
• The females have long crests like the males when they should have short crests like in real life.
• While they are portrayed with a bat like bony rod supporting the wing, real Pteranodon had no such structures.
• The skull of the animal shown in the dossier is not of Pteranodon but Caulkicephalus. This indicates there may have been a misnomer.
• Although Pteranodon was one of the biggest flying animals ever, it could only carry a burden the size and weight of a small child.
