Once I am in a call, how do I activate the speaker phone? While on the call, the "keypad" shows, but there seems to be no way to turn on the speaker phone. The only time I can put my call on the speaker is before I connect with the party I am calling. Many a time in the past few days, especially while "on hold" it would have been easier to lay the phone down and turn the speaker on. I can't do that once in the call.

If when on a call you can only see the number dialer screen, Tap the "Hide" text at the bottom right corner of the screen to return to the phone options. Then Tap the Speaker icon to turn on the Speakerphone.

Maybe that is my problem. When I am in a call, I only see the numbers, and the green phone icon. On the bottom of the screen, there is a Star for Favorites, a Clock for Recents, a Head for Contacts, a Blue Icon icon resembling a keypad for Keypad, and an Icon for Voicemail.
The "Hide" text is missing.
There's the issue. You are seeing a GREEN phone icon when on a call. It should be a RED icon. So you are on the screen for making a call, not talking on one. That's what I see before I make a call. If I was on a call I can get to that screen by tapping "Add call"
Try tapping the green bar at the very top of the screen.

I had a similar problem with my new iPhone X. After checking another app with the iPhone on loudspeaker during a call, when I returned to the phone screen it showed the numerical keypad without a "hide" button. The call button was green instead of red. I was unable to access the screen to turn the loudspeaker phone off.
I fixed this by doing a hard reset of the iPhone X. I had to check how to do a hard reset. It is different to previous iPhones. You have to press the volume up button, followed by the volume down button and then quickly press and hold the side (Siri) button. Hold this button till the apple symbol shows as the phone restarts. Here is a link to the process: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2017/11/how-to-hard-reset-iphone-x.html

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

Perhaps not, but once you have done it once it will become 2nd nature. As it's worked the same way for 10 years, including the 3 years that the post you responded to has been visible in the forum, most people have figured it out by now.

James:
The image of the keypad you show in your response is only available to me before I place a call. Once I am in a call, all I see is numbers and a green phone icon.

or
If you see neither, perhaps posting a screenshot of your own may help us.

There should be a small text icon ('Hide') in the lower right of the screen. Do you see that, either before or after doing the reset described above? If so, tap it.

Your phone is very strange. I DO NOT see any of those options on the bottom of the screen. All I see is the numbers, the hangup button, and just to the right of it the word "Hide". are you using the phone app, or some add-on calling app?

Phil:
You show two screens. Let's call them the "black" screen and the "white" screen.
When I go into "contacts" and I select a person I want to call in my contact list, and I use the little phone icon in the contact list to initiate the call, then the black screen shows up and stays active, and I can go to "speaker phone" by touching the speaker icon during the call if I want.
However, if I make a call for a person or business I want to call, using the phone number I found on their business card or their website, (they are not in my contact list) and I use the large green phone icon of the phone app to start the call, I get the white screen, and then,if I want to switch to the speaker phone, I can't get there. There seems to be no way to get back to the black screens once a phone call is started.
Also, thank you all others for responding to my issue.

Thank you all for your patience. I shut off my phone and "rebooted". Now when I use the "keypad" to make a call, and the call connects, the white screen turns into the black screen, and I see all the icons, i.e., mute, speaker phone, etc.
I think my issue is resolved. Thanks for all the help and interest. This is a great group to be associated with.

You are welcome
I was just about to respond
You cannot select the speaker before you initiate a call - the option comes on after you press the green button and the screen turns into the one with the black background
