Go back to my question Applications and Services Safari User profile for user: cb_croydon cb_croydon Author User level: Level 1 27 points Safari has become very slow, lagging and not loading pages

In the past couple of months I've found Safari incredibly slow, either not loading or hanging on pages etc, and its getting worse. Mostly its a question of the blue line at the top just stopping a quarter or halfway in; occasionally the grey screen comes up to say it couldn't connect to the server. It seems to happen most on facebook but now it's happening almost every time I use my machine. If I reload the page a few times this often works so it appears to be a constant but temporary problem. I've tried other browsers but they seem to have the same issue. My internet speed tests show excellent speeds are available and the problem is the same whether I'm connected via ethernet or WiFi (same issue happens with my desktop Mac as well as my laptop). I've deleted cookies, emptied caches, even changed the DNS server and renewed the DCHP lease. etc. You can probably tell I have a limited understanding of such things so I'm at a loss what to do. Is it something to do with me not having enough memory on my Mac?

It has nothing to do with memory.

Force Quit Safari ( command + option + esc keys). Then restart Safari holding the Shift key.

Turn off Safari extensions in Safari > Preferences > Extensions > un-checkmark all extensions.

Empty Caches. You can either choose Safari menu > Clear History Or, if you do not want to remove History go to Safari menu > Preferences > Advanced and check the “Show Develop Menu” in Menubar. Then, on that menu > “Empty Caches”.

  • Safari sporadically stops accepting page requests for a minute at a time Hi, Every-so-often my Internet equipment hiccups or the server I'm contacting is simply not responding. Maybe a packet got lost on the Internet highways. Whatever the cause is, the page request is not answered immediately. If I then wait 60(?) seconds, a timeout kicks in and displays a helpful message that the server is unresponsive. Impatient as I am, I have learned to recognise this after a few seconds, and the instinctive response is to hit refresh or click the link again etc, and the page loads immediately. I think anyone on the Internet know exactly what I'm talking about. Except lately that hasn't worked with Safari. I think it started on OSX High Sierra, and I hoped it would be fixed by updating to macOS Mojave, but unfortunately the issue remains: I *have to* wait the full minute. I have no choice. Before the timeout refresh doesn't work. I actually can't open any page at all. I click other links on the page. I hit the refresh button. I try typing a search string in the address field. I try switching to another tab or opening a new one. Nothing works. Safari is apparently not sending any requests during the timeout. As if it has decided that the network is down, so there's no point in trying…? And then suddenly the timeout triggers and the “server is not responding” text appears. When I refresh after that the page loads immediately. Everything works just fine. Until the next hiccup that makes Safari unusable for another minute. Does anyone else have this problem? Grateful for any help Best regards Johan 674 1
  • Safari 12.1.1 stops downloading pages after 4-5 web sites I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7 and 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. Just recently Safari began acting strangely. After 4-5 different web pages, the next page will not load. The load bar starts, goes about 15% across and hangs. Nothing seems to function then. I restart and try again, same thing. 4-5 pages work normally. Then, it hangs again. Restart, repeat. Very frustrating. I have no extensions loaded, no virus protection software loaded. I have an iPhoneXS and an iPadAir sharing accounts across devices. But still happens. I had to restart twice to get to this post. Any ideas? 1166 13

Some other suggestions If the above doesn't work.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db and move it to the trash.

Go to Safari Preferences/Extensions and turn all extensions off. Test. If okay, turn the extensions on one by one until you figure out what extension is causing the problem.

Safari Corruption See post by Linc Davis

If that doesn't work, try running this program in your normal user account , then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Clean up:

Run the report again and click [Clean up].

I would uninstall Memory Clean. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit.

Memory Clean Uninstall

I would uninstall Sophos. It tends to interfere with the computer's operation while providing minimal to no benefit unless you work with Windows files.

Sophos Un-install

Most posters recommend not using cleaning programs. They can destroy normal computer operations.

CleanMyMac 2 uninstall

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues.

Hi, thanks for the response - I have done all these things and although re-starting always improves it for a time, it always begins to slow down again shortly afterwards. I've looked at those other links and beyond (which is where I got the advice re: DNS etc) and no luck either. I've just seen a site where they've advised deleting everything to do with Chrome so I've just tried that and restarted - so far, so good. If it solves anything I'll let you know.

You are welcome. The software I suggested you uninstall may be causing the problem. Once that is removed, if things haven't improved, run/post another Etrecheck report.

Many thanks for the advice. I only installed memory clean, Sophos etc after experiencing these problems but it's good to know they might not be necessary. I'll do the clean up - is there any indication from the report why I might be having these issues? The issues with pages not loading/ lagging/ not connecting is just getting worse and the only thing that solves it temporarily is rebooting my machine....

Hi, I'm afraid I'm still having problems 😟 in fact, I had to reboot Safari just to get this page open... I have uninstalled everything you suggested (I think?) and used Easy Find to mop up, but please tell me if I missed anything.

Once again, thanks for your help!

Hi, its been a while but the issue persists! After removing all the 'cleaning' apps etc its been fine for a while but tonight Safari was barely usable - pages were not loading at all and I kept getting the grey screen saying it couldn't connect to the server. I'm at my wits end - I'm pasting one last EtreCheck, if you or anyone could tell me if there is anything else I could do I'd be really grateful!
