I've been threatening to record my band from the mixer and I'm going to start doing it LOL! Mainly as a tool for seeing how we can improve (ouch) but I've done this sort of thing before with a different mixer for demo purposes. I intend to record tracks individually and then bring them into Logic Pro for some minimal amount of mixing to make things more balanced like what is actually heard out front. Anyway, I'm looking at getting a hard drive for this, probably an external SSD. Then I saw a post about Phil Collen doing some practice recordings with his QSC to a thumb drive. Before buying, has anyone had experience with doing this? I don't actually own the mixer so it's not something I can simply to out and try quickly, though of course I can bring a thumb drive to the next gig and give it a shot. I imagine the number of tracks makes a difference. Off the top of my head we usually have about 10 channels live (5 vocals, not much drums miked for most gigs). I know the QSC docs say no to multi-track on thumb drives, but is it possible these have gotten better/fast enough to handle it? Also, how much recording space roughly would I need to get 2-3 hours of 10 tracks (a gig in other words)? Not sure if there are quality options when recording. Vcaster

Since I'd looked into this topic, I can point you at some helpful info straight from QSC. From: https://training.qsc.com/mod/book/view.php?id=237 You'll need about 8 or 9 megabytes of storage for every minute of track. We've found that the best results come from a USB 3.0 drive that spins at 7200 RPM and uses an external power supply ... However, there are solid state drives without an external power supply that work great too. Check out the QSC website for the most recent list of qualified hard drives. It's also possible to successfully use a USB thumb drive when recording a single stereo track. USB thumb drives come in thousands of models with varying levels of performance. Whenever I get around to it, I plan to use a high-quality 1TB or 2TB removable solid state drive (SSD). Good luck! J

I need to spend more time with it to figure out how to get maximum gain on each track. It would be easier if I were just doing sound but more difficult when you are running sound and leading the band. I use the recommended Lacie RUFWU3B 500gb hard drive. No issues. I just grab the WAV files and drag them to my Mac and drop them in Digital Performer. B

So I might give it a shot with a newer, fast thumb drive first. Worst case, I have a new thumb drive for the cost of a lunch or so. If that doesn't work, and it's very likely it won't, then I'll get an external ssd. I have two already, one for my music computer and one for the xbox, they have come down in price a LOT.... Popashanky, I know exactly what you mean. We run sound from stage and it's a juggle. I don't want to upset the apple cart trying to get a great recording. Fortunately, the main purpose is for everyone to hear how we are messing up a few things LOL! That sounds harsh, but as a keyboard player, EVERY time I've heard myself in a live recording I end up tweaking my part, my patch, or both. Like many I think, I tend to "overplay" live especially when the mix isn't ideal. Hearing it in action lets me see that yes, sometimes just hold that chord out while the guitar is being active, and he should do the same etc. B

So I got a Verbatim500 240GB SSD drive and it worked OK day 1 but then on day 2 I got a message saying no more space on the drive. Took the drive home and put it into my computer and none of the songs I thought we recorded were there. Nothing saved to the drive, and there was a huge amount of space left. Went and bought a new drive and now when I try and record yesterday everything looked OK but when I pressed record, the counter stayed at 0:00. Anyone had this problem before and if so, how did you fix it. thanks sws1
