These quick fabric corner bookmarks can be made from fabric scraps, take no time at all and would be great paired with a book or bookstore gift card!

I love giving a little something handmade with something store bought. It makes it just a little more personal and special.

I don’t know how many coffee cozies I’ve given along with a coffee shop gift card or travel cup. So many, in fact, I think just about everyone I know has one and it’s time for something new.

I’ve been sharing tutorials on my blog for over a decade, and I’m frequently asked how they can be printed or saved. The answer is here! You can find this printable tutorial in my shop, which contains the instructions, color photos, and templates from the original blog post, without the extra things you don’t need to make the project. The file is in PDF format, so you can either print or save it to your computer.

I made about two dozen of these, just using pieces of fabric from my scrap box. To make one you’ll need:

  • two 4” by 4” pieces of iron-on interfacing

  • three 4” by 4” squares of fabric (I’ve made these in sizes all the way down to starting with 2 1/2" squares)

These have a little nicer feel if you include the interfacing, but it’s optional. I’ve made lots of them without, and they work just fine. If you choose to skip it, just proceed with the directions after I mention applying it.

Cut one of the interfacing squares in half diagonally and save one half for your next bookmark.

Iron the triangle of interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric you want for the corner.

Iron the square of interfacing onto the wrong side of the piece you want to face the front behind the corner.

Fold the fabric with the triangle in half diagonally, wrong sides together and where the interfacing edge is, and press.

Lay the square with interfacing on it right side up. Add the folded triangle on top in the upper right corner.

Lay the other square on top, face down. Pin.

Stitch around the outer edge with a 1/4" seam allowance, leaving 1 – 1 1/2" open at the bottom edge. Clip the corners.

Turn right side out through the opening and press, turning in the opening 1/4".

Stitch all the way around, close to the outer edge.

Slide a gift card inside or slip it onto a book.

  • Again, I’ve made many of these omitting the fusible interfacing entirely, and as long as you use good quality fabric, they work just fine without it.

  • You can also vary the size of the bookmark. My favorite is the little one I mentioned, beginning with 2 1/2" squares.

  • If you’re going to make a lot of these, I highly recommend purchasing a square acrylic ruler and a rotary cutter.

This would also make a great little gift all by itself!
