Coker University Mission
Coker University is a student-centered, comprehensive university. It is dedicated to providing every student an academic curriculum based upon a uniformly excellent liberal arts core that enhances the structured development of key personal skills.
The University’s goal is to graduate students with the ability to think analytically and creatively, and to write and speak effectively.
Experiences both in and out of the classroom are focused on active student involvement and the practical application of academic knowledge that lead to lifelong learning. Coker measures its success by the personal and professional accomplishments enjoyed by all members of the academic community.

Coker University is a student-focused, private liberal arts college located in Hartsville, South Carolina. Coker combines round table, discussion-based learning with hands-on experiences to promote active participation in and out of the classroom. Our engaging, close-knit community prepares students with the confidence and skills they need to reach their personal best, in college and beyond.
Founded in 1908, Coker is a bachelor’s and master’s degree-granting institution and competes in 24 NCAA Division II sports. Redefining undergraduate research, Coker students present at local and regional conferences and competitions — leading change in the workforce and beyond. Our students go on to be leaders in industry, government, and the military. They lead companies, not-for-profits, and battalions.

Located in downtown Hartsville, our main campus covers 15 acres of scenic grounds and historic buildings. The City of Hartsville offers a small-town feel with big amenities — the convenience of local eateries and retail establishments, and plenty of entertainment venues, all within walking distance of campus.

Coker’s student body is diverse and inclusive. With nearly 1,000 students from 33 states and 16 countries, our student population is 60 percent female with a strong minority influence. At Coker, we celebrate multicultural backgrounds and the unique ideas and experiences each student brings to campus, the classroom, the studio, and the locker room.

Our faculty are also leaders in their fields, subject matter experts and fully invested in their students. More than 95 percent of all full-time faculty hold a doctorate or terminal degree in their field. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 12:1, you won’t need to compete for mentorship, academic support, or getting involved in research early at Coker.

Coker provides a unique college experience with tailored course offerings to fit your focus. Our signature round table learning brings students and professors together in small groups for discussions that encourage critical thinking, teamwork, and the type of problem solving required by today’s leaders. The traditional undergraduate program offers nearly 60 areas of study, including new allied health programs— or you can design your own major.

Students who live on campus are safe and supported within our close-knit residential community. Coker offers nine diverse residence halls, ranging from traditional community suites to apartment-style living. Students become leaders as residence assistants creating thriving communities within our halls. The Susanne G. Linville Dining Hall is the perfect spot to share a meal with friends or take a study break at Starbucks coffee without having to leave campus.

The Coker Cobras offer student athletes the opportunity to lead in 24 NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports as a member of the South Atlantic Conference. Our campus includes a 22-acre complex for outdoor sports, and the state-of-the-art DeLoach Center features a 1,908-seat gymnasium, an auxiliary gym, interactive classrooms, a student-athlete only weight room, campus fitness center, athletic offices, and more.
