  • Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Rainbow High is an animated series based on the popular line of dolls and matching accessories. The dolls essentially come to life in this series, which chronicles the lives of the group of seven freshman friends as they begin their time at a renowned visual arts high school. Their bright and bold hair colors follow the color scheme of the rainbow, and the issues that ensue around them are just as dramatic. Viewers who enjoy the series will likely want to purchase the dolls, if they do not own them already.

Parents say that the show offers a colorful and imaginative take on art-focused content, appealing particularly to younger audiences; however, many express concerns over its shallow themes centered around social media validation and insufficient educational value. While some appreciate the positive messages about friendship and creativity, the predominant sentiment reflects disappointment in its focus on superficiality and the promotion of influencer culture, leading some parents to discourage their children from watching it.

What's the Story?

RAINBOW HIGH is about a group of seven friends who are navigating their way through their first year at a competitive visual arts high school. Ruby, Poppy, Sunny, Jade, Skyler, Violet, and Bella must work together by using their individual talents to prepare for the first semester's fashion show, which determines their final grade. School proves to be difficult as they are faced with hazing, boy drama, and difficult class assignments. The rainbow friends think they've found their groove when things suddenly take a turn, and they must welcome someone new to the group.

Is It Any Good?

Our review: Parents say (24 ): Kids say (18 ):

This colorful series lacks much educational value and puts too much emphasis on consumerism and outward appearance. Children who love the Rainbow High doll collection will enjoy watching this series, but it's a missed opportunity for teaching viewers more about visual arts. Characters often use their skills to attract attention from boys, gain followers and likes on social media, or to avoid doing schoolwork. While the show illustrates the importance of friendship, it also lacks diversity and glorifies cliques.
