Ramadan or Ramazan, the most holy month in the Islamic calendar, which began on 6th May this year. This month is all about fasting and feasting for the Muslims all across the globe. During this period, they observe fasts from sunrise to sunset. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam and is commonly called rozas. As per the Islamic tradition, this practice inculcates the spirit of abstinence from sins and is a time for self-purification. This fasting period is followed by the festival of Eid, which marks the end of Ramadan. Every adult Muslim is required to follow Ramadan. During these days, they have only two meals throughout the day. The meals are called Suhoor and Iftar. Suhoor is eaten before sunrise and Iftar is eaten after the sunset. Both of them should include balanced foods that brace the people for the fast next day. RamadanWhat is Suhoor?Suhoor or Suhur is the most important meal of the day, which is eaten before the sunrise. People who observe the fast during this time period have one of the two meals before dawn. Mesaharati is a person who wakes up everyone for the meal. He does it by beating the drum or calling out the people by their name.This meal consists of various healthy and energy giving delicacies, which helps them sustain throughout the day. It contains foods with all the essential nutrients that can be easily digested. Fasting all day isn't easy as the body needs stamina to go on. This meal makes you feel satiated and keeps the problems like weakness and nausea at bay. It prepares you for the day ahead. A well balanced Suhoor diet can help you sail through the day smoothly. This meal has to be finished strictly before the break of dawn. Suhoor mealWhat to eat in SuhoorA nutrient-rich diet for Suhoor includes carbohydrates in the form of whole grains, brown rice and wheat bread. Foods like meat, milk, cheese, yoghurt, eggs can be consumed as they raise the blood sugar level slowly and also keep you full. As drinking water is not permitted in the day, you can add fruits with high water content in your meal. Fruits like watermelon, pineapple, mangoes, plums and others are perfect for suhoor. You can also have dried fruits and salads. What is Iftar? After the long hours fast, the second and last meal of the day is called Iftar. When the sun sets, the people who keep fast offer evening prayers, Maghrib and then break their fast. Out of the five prayers, Muslims are required to perform every day, Maghrib is the fourth one just before the iftar. Traditionally, people eat three dates to break the fast as it is believed that Prophet Muhammad broke his fast in the same manner. An elaborate meal is prepared for the iftar, which is enjoyed by the people together in a group . It replenishes the lost energy of the day as usually involves a lavish feast. Iftar mealWhat do people eat in IftarPeople delve into the scrumptious delicacies in Iftar, which includes soups, biryanis, haleem, kebabs etc. This is a hearty meal with both vegetarian and non- vegetarian dishes and also delectable desserts. Muslims households worldwide have native dishes of their own which are prepared for the meal. A diet rich in complex carbohydrates with brown rice, whole grain foods and lean proteins yoghurt, fish, poultry just like suhoor meal is recommended for this meal as well. Drinking plenty of water is also important during this meal to satisfy the water requirements of the day. You can also have freshly squeezed juices to hydrate yourself.
